Hale, chairman of the State Road Department, today called attention of civic organi zations, public utilities and pri- to ion vate individuals who desire undertake highway beautifi projects to the necessity of con- sulting with the Road Department before such projects are made or public utility poles erected, otherwise the money and effort spent on such projects may be wasted. “The Road Department is an- |xious to tooperate with all or- ganizations desiring to engage in highway beautification projects,” Hale said, “but before such pro- jects are made, they should con- sult with the Road Department In this manner the location of | plantings is made with a proper consideration being given to probable future developments in the pavement and earthwork, of which only the department i aware. “Attention is called to the fact that most of today’s mileage will in time be reconditioned and brought up to a more generous design; ditches eliminated as far as practicable; slopes will be flat- tened and pavement and should- ers will be widened. This is done primagily in the interest of saf- lety. However, it materially re- duces maintenance costs and adds as to the appearance of our high- ways. “In recent years the depart- ment has adopted a policy of en- deavoring to secure 200 foot right- of-w wherever possible. In so are profiting by the which has __ befallen populated states. doing we experience more densely As population density increased in Florida, highway accommoda- tions will have to be increased; pavements widened and in some cases double lanes built. Right- of-way wide enough for these im- provements is .procutable today, whereas if acquisition is put off until the time of actual need, costs will be prohibitive. This is the history in all densely built up countries. It is already ob- vious in many, ‘ion of Florida, especially a cities where, had the practice been put into ef- fect many years ago, we Wotild today have the benefit of much | greater traffic safety. “In the past many worthwhile roadside plantings have gone to waste because the Road Depart- ment was not consulted and the work was not coordinated with the plan for future development Organizations can easily get in touch -with the department's maintenance engineer in their territory, notify the division of- fice, or contact T.
