Sawyer, 68, of 1207 Florida street, night watehman at the Casa Marina Hotel, was knocked down by a touring car at 6 o'clock this morning and died 50 minutes later in a hospital. He placed the injured man on the sidewalk and rushed to the sher- iff's office for help. With the aid of Sheriff Niles and two prison- ers, Mr. Sawyer was lifted into the car and rushed to the hospital where he died in a few minutes. HAPPY } Rheumatism Study Planned By Michigan (By Assceiote? Preas) ANN ARBOR. Feb. 18—A cure for rheumatism is being sought by the University of Michigan. A clinic will be established in which specialists in chemistry. dietetics, surgery and bacteriolo- gy will concentrate their efforts in a study of the malady about which science knows little. Dr. Cyrus C. Sturgis, director of the department of internal medi- cine, says rheumatism is one of teday’s majer medical problems YEAR! reh fori trace when results of the last campaign proved his prognostica- tions as wet as a liquor dealers’ convention, has bobbed up again and is issuing mythical odds and maybe-so standings of the various candidates, but it is doubtful if gamblers who trusted his charts and forms in the past will pout much stock in them again. Candidates who find themsel¥- es leading the batting average ac- cording to Frank’s recording will probably derive a great sense of personal satisfaction from the fig- ures, but will do well to. remem- ber that the ballots which really count are not sent out from any- body’s barber shop. So far, as near as I have been able to figure out, nobody seems to be very much concerned over the situation but the boys who are running. I find that Mr. and} Mrs. John Citizen would rather discuss the price of turnips, last night’s bridge score, or Junior’s report card, than burden their minds with political cross-word puzzles. Now and then among the lay-| men you will discover some guy with a yen for analysis and sta- tistics who can add up a column of loose talk, multiply it by here- say and subtract with a given number of IFS and BUTS and arrive at a so-called answer, but it is a lot simpler to put all the names in a hat, close your eyes and draw out one, and the result is usually as satisfactory. Before long our highways will be cluttered up with sound trucks and our public squares over-run with oratgrs; trees and fences will be defaced with gruesome plac- ards bearing the mug of this or that aspirant. Print shops will be called upon to paw through cut files for the larger Union Labels designed ta impress the so-called working man. Hands will be shaken with gus- to and backs slapped with vigor- ous cordiality. Bull-necked, red- faced, aggressive candidates and workers will circulate wherever two or three are gathered togeth- er, chucking unresponsive chil- dren under chins, tipping hats and bowing to the ladies, greeting old folk with charming smiles and cheerful flattery. “What's wrong with the coun- try”, will be. explained in detail and “wi ight to be done about it” RP Sing word pic- nt and counter- rpagh the air se, and a good time-will be had by all. + Jipdtead oF 20pig to figure out whos Sopagenie™ many votes, what most us would like to , pave guy, tell us is which seh Fe wit keep how many promises.
