It is an occasion for universal rejoicing, for the long struggle to secure an oversea highway has been very universally shared among us. Rare indeed is that Key West citizen who has not contributed, either directly by donation, or indirectly by taxation, to the work now so happily approaching completion. In charge of the work is Captain Ed Sheeran A recent visit to the project, made by an engineer who has had a wide experience and who is ac- tively: engaged now on several Projects, brought forth the state- ment from him that: “The entire project of handling this swing span, the able way in which the difficulties of the work were overcome, reflected great credit on the engineers who did the work, especially because of the saving effected, and because there was not one man injured, not even a tool lost overboard. “A magnificent piece of work”, this engineer concluded. LODGE OFFICIAL TO VISIT HERE Mrs. Charlotte B. Perry, Wor- thy Grand Matron, Order of the Eastern Star of Florida, will make her official visit to Fern Chapter No. 21, at a special meet- ing to be held at Scottish Rite Hall, Friday eveing, 7:30 o'clock This will be Mrs. Perry’s first visit to Key West. She will be ‘accompanied by several members of her official family, and the party plans to remain in Key West over the week-end. | plication for a charter was sent to Robert Smith, vice president of the Florida Junior Chambers of | Commerce, and will be presented ; |at the directors meeting to be held this weekend in Palatka. A small group in the city has initiated plans at the suggestion of Robert Smith, who sent a ‘long distance phone call through | yesterday and told them that Key West was the only city in Florida that amounted to anything which did not have a Junior Chamber of Commerce. If the charter is approved, a membership drive will be imme- diately begun, Joe Allen, tem- porary secretary and Earl Adams, councilnian, said today. Anyone who is under the age of 36 will be eligible for membership and application may be made to either of the two before-mentioned for the present. It is hoped that the Key West Junior Chamber will be organized before the convention of Junior Chamber of Commerce units of the state to be held in June at Miami The importance of a local Jun- ior Chamber, and the fact that Key West, which is hailed every- where over the state as a city that is coming back with a bang. needs such a unit, is stressed by the group initiating the plan. Co- operation with the Senior Cham- ber of Commerce is promised. G. FERRALDO BECOMES ILL George Ferraldo was taken sud- denly ill this morning at his home, 905 White street, and was rushed to the Marine Hospital in Pritchard's Funeral Home ambu- lance, where he was given med- ical attention, shortly after which he was returned to his home. That act alone, like the highway itself, will mark the beginning of a new day of cooperation and success for the Island City. The Key West Citizen which has never wavered in its devotion to the idea of a road to the mainland, even when that course met with opposition, in its inception, regards it as an earned privilege and honor to sound the call to the people of Key West to join hands and make ready to celebrate the realization of this long-cherished dream. We urge the County Commission, the City Council, the Chamber of Commerce, the Rotary Club, the Wom- an’s Club, the Cuban Club, the miniistry of various faiths, the great fraternal! orders; all the elements that present organized intelligence to the consideration of our civic problems, to appoint representatives who shall coalesce into one moving spirit to direct the universal rejoicing of our people on that great day of Key West. And let it be Key West's day. Close knit as only those can be who have come through great tribulation we know our resources of talent and energy. We need ne strange voice to tell us what to think and feel, we need no alien performers to amuse us. Our own people and the people whom we have set in the seats of power in city, county, state and nation and who therefore «re our own, possess all the resources that are needed to voice our heartfelt rejoicing and te put inte words the aspirations that we shall yet translate into deeds. The organizations we have, named hoid within them the ability toe create a celebration that shall command the respect and admiration of the nation, so many citi- zens of which, will gather with us on that memorable day. But the time has come for us to bestir ourselves and to secure fer our citizens, great and small whom we represent, the acclaim that is so justly their due as Vic- tery crowns the result of a prolenged struggle against heavy odds.
