SATURDAY, AUGUST 7, 1926. ‘THE KEY WEST CITIZEN | | SOCCCSSORESSOEOUESOEOOS CO00OTEESOOCODODEOOOOOE® | STRAND MONROE SOOCSSSOOCOSSSOSOHOOHOTOE 1OHROOHOOSEESESOOEOHSOOE: TODAY “The Bat” Comes As A Superb Mystery Drama All the elements which made | “The Bat” on the stage the most | |her, successful play of excitement, have been crystallized into a superb screen presentation by Roland West, which shows at the Strand Theatre today, “ig Here we have murder done, trated, mystery distilled | and double-distilled, solution deferred, and denouement that is all sur- prise. They are the big ingredients of fascinating mystery melodrama masterfully assembled in “The Bat” as the most ambitious effort of the kind in motion pictures. “The Bat” takes its title from super-thug, so designated by the press and police, and he leaves upon the scene of his Jepredations the mark of the bat as the emblem of his prowess. ‘The main scene of these stir- ring proceedings is a Long Island house recently vacated by a bank- er now believed dead, occupied now by a hard-boiled New York spinster who is inclined to pooh-pooh any- thing that seems sinister or super- natural. She is gradually put on the ragged edge by queer goings- on in the house; ghostly sounds, strange shots and scuffles, and a half dozen counterplots in which which she is concerned as a parti- San or as an eyewitness, She de- termines to hold the fort, and en- lists a detective and a half dozen or more friends and servants, and then before her eyes murder is done. Anyone of the others in the household, or near by, may have done the deed, and in fact everyone has something to hide, so that in the lightning-like change of the plot no spectator can really guess the criminal. “‘The Bat,” with the magnificent re- sources of the motion picture, has been. made into a marvel of sweep- ing movement, quicker surprise and astounding solution for ‘the | \Intense Acting ‘Nadia Ramiroff,” the exotic Rus- |“The Coming ‘of Amos” tobbery attempted, pursuit frus-| TOMORROW | | Colors Pictare | Not even a princess can account for the tricks her heart plays on In the ease of the “Princess sian noblewoman so_ colorfully sketched by William J. Locke in which shows ‘tomorrow at the Monroe Theatre. This Cecil B. DeMille super- vised production starring Rod La Rocque portrays the Princess, surrounded by ardent suitors of } wealth and title, falling in love with “Amos” an artless boy sud- denly transplanted from a sheep ranch in wildest Australia to the super-sophistication of the Riviera. Uncouth, ignorant and grotes- quely clad, “Amos” first appeals to the princess as “different,” but she soon discovers that she re- fleets his .incongruous love for her. The presence of a villainous husband interferes with an other- wise perfect romance, and the ad- ventures of “Amos” in releasing from the power held over her by a husband who forced her to marry him, hold new thrills in store for the blase theatre-goer. Jetta Goudal, the vivid French actress, plays opposite Rod La Roeque in the role of the Princess, while Noah Beery as the “heavy” fills the role of “Ramon Garcia” to perfection. Trixie Friganza and Richard Carle are other featured players in the produc- tion, which is being filmed under the direction of Paul Sloane. ‘ TORTURED WITH SLEEPLESS.
