WEDNESDAY, JULY 21, 1926. STRAND POoCoeccoevocecoceegeeee: TODAY Von Film A Novelty Those critics who went to great pains to condemn the initial di- vectorial product of Josef von Sternberg, “The Salvation Hunt- ers,” will find, to their disappoint- ment, that this young director has accomplished in “The Exquisite Sinner,” which shows at the Strand Theatre today, all that was predicted by his champions when the merits and demerits of “The Salvation Hunters” was the great- ext motion picture topic of the day. “The. Exquisite Sinner,” which is a screen adaptation of Alden Brooks’ novel “Escape,” has been pronounced by many able critics as standing head and shoulders above all other productions of the past year. And among these critics are said to be several who bitterly denounced “The Salvation Hunt- aa In choosing his story for his first Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer pro- duction, von Sternberg deliberate- ly selected a story as opposite from his first suecess as night from day. He discarded the drabness of his first production for a mantle of color and comedy. He changed the now famous slow tempo of. “The Salvation Hunters” into high speed, discarding sighs and tears for smiles and laughter. But there is one thing he did not discard, and that is his, re- markable theme treatment and composition, which distinguishes him from all other directors on the sereen. He has made “The Exquisite Sinner” into a satirical study of psychology where the average director would have played it for a comedy-drama. ‘The picture tells the story of a young Frenchman who burst the bonds of convention, discarded an aristocratic fiancee, cut loose from family ties, abandoned wealth and went wandering—with a gypsy girl. ‘The east includes: Conrad Nagel, Renee Adoree, Paulette Duval. Frank Currier, George K. Arthur, Matthew Bets, Helena D’Algy and Claire DuBrey. TOMORROW “Gag Man” Play r Important Role Among the host of clever per- sons who combine to make the perfect picture production, there are a great number who go on, day by day, doing their bit in a credital manner without ever appearing in the spotlight. Prominent among these, is the “gag man.” In movie terms, a “gag” is a situation, ordinarily quite independent of the plot but relating generally to the story. In ether words, it is an interesting, and more than often comical side- light, that adds tone, colcr, and life to the story. The “gag man” is the one who thinks these situations out and adapts them to the plot. Nowadays good feature picture is without “gags.” Im the Christie production of “Seven Days,” from the stage farce by Mary Roberts Rinehart and Avery Hopwood, which ap- pears at the Strand Theatre to- morrow, Norman McLeod is re- sponsible for the many and vari- ous situations that provoke mirth. MeLeod started in films drawing the funny little cartoons that at- tracted attention on the subtitles of Christie Comedies. Because he ean see the funny side of things without losing the human element, he was attached to the “Charley's Aunt” company when that film ‘was made. When “Seven Days” ‘went into production, ‘34 he became the director's first aide. The cast of “Seven Days,” which is a Producers Distributing release, directed by Bcott Sidney, includes Lillian Rich, ri Hale, Lilyan Tashman, in Austin, Hallam Cooley, * Badie Gribbon, Rosa Gore ,ani others. : ‘The sessions of this, the second @ay of the convention of the Inter- national Association of Police Chiefs in Chicago, is to be fea- tured with an address by Vice MOM’N POP OUT OF TOWN TODAY AND >’ L KNEW You WERE Y QUITE FOND OF Roast PoRK— I PREPARED (T ESPECIALLY dad For ‘fou | rt THE KEY WEST CITIZEN : In he Same Boat SET AN Exiea PLACE FOR \—__) DINNER ,OLGAm MRS,TYTE (S AND IT WAS DELICIOUS —' Ts ts HE FIRST REAL MEAL I've since.
