Columbus was not hunting a new continent you remember, he was looking for a new route to In- dia. If you will go back into your history, you will find that those! who traveled the caravan routes) overland from Southern Europe across to India experienced some} opposition from hostile tribes and marauders along the road. Col- “tumbus conceived the idea that a safer and more peaceful road to India could be reached by faring forth into the West, and so he! went and discovered a new world, although he never reached India. But why, you ask, was it so im- 388, portant to reach India? Well, Mrs. Spottswood went on to explain, whey did not use ice in those days in Southern Europe, but depended .} upon spices to keep the meats and other perishable foods which were prepared and stored up against further needs. India was the best known available source of supply | for these spices, and so these ad- venturesome ancients braved con- siderable danger and experienced untold hardships to secure the spices which the house wives de- manded in’ those days for curing meats and perishable comestibles. There was no such thing as elec-} trie refrigeration then, but we do have electric refrigeration now, atid it makes no difference to the housewife whether hostile tribes} are riding up and down the cara- Queen of Court ~ eR ad ‘One of the stars of the recent tennis | tournament at Wimbledon, Engiand, | Was Senorita Lilli de Alvarer of Spain. ‘She remained In the running | ‘@ntil the final round when she wae! The electric refrigerator is made |up of a refrigerating mechanism and.an insulated cabinet such as is used for eooling with ice. A set of copper coils is placed in what would cprrespond tothe ice com- | partment in an ordinary refriger- ator. A compresor or condenser with an electric motor built into the same unit is placed in the base of ihe cabineb or perhaps in the basement or onother convenient | location. Refrigeration is accomplished | by the circulation through the coils of a refrigerating liquid - common- jly Sulphur Dioxide. This Sul- | phur Dioxide absorbs the heat from the cabinet, leaving it ¢old. | The refrigerant in the form of a | gas is drawn down into the com: pressor where it gets rid of its | heat, returns to a liquid form and goes back to the coils ready for another cycle of cooling. There will be plenty of | this ice for ordinary household | needs - cooling drinks and the like. | And another nice feature is, that a great variety of desserts, | ices, creams, sherbets and the like can be frozen in the same trays. Some of the outstanding ad- yantages of electric refrigeration, Mrs. Spottswood pointed out, are | convenience, ability to have mod- jern efficient refrigeration without any worry or trouble, labor-saving, actual economy, for it costs no more ordinarily to run the electric refrigerator,’ than one would pay for jee, and with the elimination of labor and of food spoilage, and | freedom from the pests of the } south — roaches, ants, ete., for | these refrigerators are practically vermin proof, there’s a decided | economy, which no thrifty house- | wife can afford to overlook. “Neuralgia” comes from two Greek words meaning “nerve col | | | CORAL, ISLES | sTupio || JEFFERSON HOTEL BLDG. } Room 203, (2nd. fleer) SIGNS, SHOWCARDS DECORATING, ETC. youthfy! star as another Suzanne. + frigerator is eniirely automatic,| Miriam Iwabell, Nottage. is mainta‘ned in the refrigerator| Racer Nettane, Defendant. training, local supervision and the administration of vocational work, under the direction of the federal board ..of vocational education, which will. be represented at the meeting by J.
