The friendly fronds of the im- mense palms reach out and bid one welcome, and the stately royal 'palm graces dooryards of many jhomes. Truly spoke the one who | said that this little eoral isle ‘comes wonderfully near being ‘one lgreat big bouquet of flashing |flowers and rich tropical green, the fancily formed foliage of the |ornamental shrubs being... more \gaudy in their many bright colors, |shades and tints than s6me of the | Maost beautiful blossoms. Some sections of the city I find | have the appearance of a typical Spanish village, then there are the many homes of splendor with their lovely lawns simply beautiful to ibehold in their pleasing array of tropical \ green and flowers of every hue—and all this at a sea- son of the year when all is bleak and bare back home. The numerous fine schools are an inspiration, as are also the jmodern edifices of worships, the |magnificent tourist hotels and im- {posing public buildings. Since features that are intense- ly interesting for visitors and |n@vcomers may have become com- |monplace to people residing in | Key West all the time, brief men- |tion is here made of a few of the |many places and objects of inter- jest that appeal most to strangers, | with the suggestion that at least these be included in sight-seeing trips with tourists, prospective in- vestors and. citizens to be, with some one along who can tell about {them in an intelligent way: | ‘TheeSan Carlos theatre, sacred | |to the heart of every loyal Cu-/ {ban, appeals strongly to the |patriotic emotions of everyone, | |being located, I have been told, on |the hallowed spot where plans lwere formulated for the rebellion \that resulted in the freedom of | |Cuba. For this reason, I have | learned, it is often referred to as; the “cradle of Cuban independ- ence.” e } The great navy yard with its | igracefully winding — driveways | fringed with cocoanut and palm, its interesting docks, warships and |submarines, and enclosing within | its bounds the third largest wire- | less station in the world with its | three sloping steel towers piercin; f the heavens to a height of 350 ,feet and broadcasting words the} world over. Some days the fans | were singing, while people back! home were vainly striving to keep | warm, i As a city of rare natural | Il be under the direction of fat from the mainland, but now |beauty, I have never seen the} equal of Key West, where smoke | and dust are unknown. The} thoroughfares all nicely paved and | kept immaculately clean. © And it} is marvelous to note that every | street at either end runs right into the sea, for Key West is com- pletely surrounded by the prettiest waters under the blue sky. It is correctly claimed that Key West “has the longest street in the world,” reaching, as it really does, “from the Atlantic ocean to the Gulf of Mexico.” But that} need not be very long, for at one place Flagler avenue just has room to pass between the ocean and gulf. It is so interesting to visit the docks where. gigantic steamers from all parts of the world come and go, where fishing fleets land with immense catches of delectable | denizens of the deep, a single ves- sel often bringing as much as ten thousand pounds of fish at a time, to be cleaned, iced, shipped out and eaten by people in all parts of America. 3 * But perhaps the greatest at- traction at the waterfront is the turtle crawl, where the big fel- lows in oval shells are continually bobbing up to get & gulp of fresh air and going down again. ‘They are of differeit sizes and often weigh up to hundreds of pounds each. Delicious steaks and.stews are made of them, as is also the famous Key West canned turtle soup, which forms an important article of commerce. The turtles (Continued on Page 8) fier it we wonderful results. All Druggists. F. J. CHENEY & CO,, Toledo, O FURNITURE RENOVATED, Upholstered and Refinished.
