PAGE TWO MOVE MAKING CAPE COD CANAL PUBLIC -- UTILITY BEGINS | | SANDY, TORTUOUS CHANNEL EIGHT MILES LONG SAVES 70 MILES ON BOSTON-NEW YORK ROUTE BUZZARDS BAY, Mass., March 16.—The famous Cape Cod Canal which cuts 70 miles from the water trip between Boston and New York, is probably to be re- | stored to a public utility. While the saving in mileage, and consequently in time and fuel, is important, the inland route has a greater advantage in that it averts the necessity of the | hazardous route along the outside of Cape Cod. The canal itself is only eight miles in length and the total dis- tance from one end to the other, ineluding the distance behind the bregkwaters and through the ap- proaches; is 13 miles. The pass- age takes about two hours. /The depth is 25 feet, according to Murray Hulbert, president of the canal company, The original cost, he said, was $8,250,000, and the price at which it is being. of- feféd to the government. is $11,- 500,000, the difference repre- sentitig” only @ part of ificrease in its “teplacement” ‘cost. at present- Aes | vantage of the canal has narrow, shoal and tor- per tp channel, Whicht has caused the larger steamers to touch the sides,..sctapé the bottom,.or get off-their course.and pursue a zig- zag rdtite through the canal for miles before their officers could get them straightened: out again. PRESENTATION OF ° COUNTESS’ PLAY (Ry _Axsocinted Presse WASHINGTON, March 16. —*Ashes “of love,” the Countess of Cathcart’s play, based on her South African elopement with the Earl of Craven, was presented last night in London and Wash- ington, censored in London, but, so far as can be learned, untouched by the-blue pencil here, where the effort to bar the eountess because of “moral turpitude” originated. London dispatches said the play, rewritten to prevent reflection upon the Earl, moved the audience to laugh- ter in the midst of scenes supposed to be serious; the . unexpected version here with the countess leading the cast, prompted one ¢ritic te say “as drama it was just so much talk, and then more talk.” Distinguished Washington- ians,, members of the diplo- matic and congressional sets, viewed the play but their re- actions to it were not divulged, The audience here ex- perienced the novelty of list- ening to a plea from the stage that. it and the critics be kind to the play ard its star. The plea was made by George Vivian, thegdirector, after the newspaper men at first advised that they could not see the show, were ad- mitted .when one of them suggested that a court suit might be resorted to. The play, Vivian explained, was intended to be more narra- tive than drama, and he sug- gested that common hospital- ity toward the countess was to .be expected of the audience.
