TWENTY-EIGHT ENTOMBED IN EXPLOSION AT BOTTOM OF SHAFT IN WEST VIR- GINIA (By Asnocinted Press) ECCLES, W. Va., March 9.— With the lives of 28 entombed miners at stake, rescue workers headed by state and federal offi- eials fought early today to pene- trate a barrier of debris near the bottom of the shaft of a mine of the Crab Orchard Improvement Company near here, where an ex- plosion took a toll of at least one life beside walling in the 28 whose fate has yet to be determined. The explosion, felt a few mi utes before 7 o'clock |gst night, not only closed entry to mine number five, in which the men were entombed, but sent a wave of .death-dealing gas through a connecting passage into mine mumber 6 whose shaft was a quar- ter of a mile away. Lowell Goins, negro, was killed by the fumes and several others suffer- ed ill effects. Of the 40 in the mumber 6 workings, all except Goins were brought out alive. For more than five hours, two of these men were listed as missing ‘but éarly today rescue workers found one.about 30 feet from the bot- tom’ of the deeper shaft of the number five mine. The rescue teams encountered the mass of debris which delayed their: furth- ‘er progress for several hours. Ventilating fans had not been af- fected by the blast but. there was no-way to determine whether falls of slate might have cut off the passage of air within the mine. The 28 whom a check ne ea pany officials showed to be in:the mine, were believed scattered its various entries, definite was known as % the nature ofthe explosion but it was believed to have been only & local one. : oseee segecse eneveoose WORLD SIN BRIEF ae . aac aan entne £ (By Ansaectated Press) ,, Austen Chamberlain holds hur- Pg nda ra with German at Geneva on disputed t seats after Briand takes = premiership for ninth ” *- * * © Caillaux refuses finance port- folio. and it is given to Raoul Ls aa * » Amibassador Shefficld presents note to Mexico insisting that American churchmen should not suffer unduly from enforcement: of Mexican constitution, bi * * House judiciary. committee x. funds in eastern Illinois ‘ * 0° * “Three guards are injured when conviets in camp near Atlanta mutiny and six escape; three are gs * * . KISS AND MAKE UP NOW POPULAR FAD (Ry Associated Press) NEW YORK, March 9.— To kiss and make up is be- coming a popular ending to separation and divorce suits which have been holding pub- lie attention lately. The latest involved in re- conciliation plans are Sebas- tian S. Kresge, ten cent store owner, and Mrs. Doris Mer- cer Kresge, whose matri- monial differences, as they involve the question of stocks and bonds, are now before the supreme court of New York. The trial was sudden- ‘ly adjourned yesterday. The couple conferred with the justice and then went in search of the pastor of their church. In Paris, are Mr. and Mrs. James A. Stillman, happy on a second honeymoon. Five years ago they launched upon @ eahpaign of counter charges, In Bermuda Lord and Lady Craven are prolonging a second . honeymoon, after. a tempestuous matrimonial course that touched the shores of three continents, spent it- self in two divorce suits in England, and had a final backfire ever the question of what constitutes § ‘“‘moral turpitude.” Countess Cath- cart, the cause of it all, has ‘won the right to enter this dountry, While a supreme court jury deliberated wheth- er, to grant her a divorce re- cently, Mrs. William Kevitt nton met her actor-hus- i in conference. with Justice Wasservogel, and took the matter out of the jury’s hands. Marjorie Ram- beau who was named by Mrs. Mafiton as co-respondent, ‘wishes the couple happiness. A variation on the theme is being played by the Tin- ney’s—Frank of Musical Fame, and Mrs. Edna Daven- port Tinney, of Vaudeville. Domestic trials of the Tin- ney’s were revealed when Frank was arrested on a charge of beating Imogene Wilson, then of the Follies, finally ended in a divorce for Mrs. Tinney, but the Tin- ney’s ate the turkey of re- conciliation on Thanksgiving and announced that they would probably appear on the stage again together, and were the best of friends. The second honeymoon idea doesn’t always work out. Robert B. Dula, Jr., son of a former vice ‘president of the American Tobacco Company, and Mrs. Elsie Hinman Dula, paused during her suit for seperation last week to con- fer with Justice Prosqauer. Then when everything began to look rosy, negotiations were broken off and the separation was granted yes- terday. Another case of a pro- posed second hosieymoon coming to naught was told in court yesterday. Mrs. Eleanor V. Brewster testified that her husband, Eugene V. Brewster, magazine publish- er, suggested they have: a second honey-moon. Then, she charges, Miss Corliss Palmer, movie actress, who had already stepped into her home, stepped into the dis- cussion and ‘ended it with ridicule. Mrs. Brewster was awarded a $200,000 verdict against the actress, now in Hollywood, for alienation of affections.
