Freaks of an Oklahoma Storm. Here are some of the freaks inci- dents of the tornado in Day county, near Grand, says the Grand Progress. A large number of chickens were killed, and most of them had all feath- ers pulled off, excepting the wing feathers. At Henry McQuigg’s it took a wheat binder and carried it over two fences and put it down wrong side up. The fences were not injured, but the binder was badly damaged. At Mr. Wells’ it pulled up the posts in a two- wire fence and carried some. of the posts a long distance, but left some of them in the ground where the fence stood. The two wires were carried into a field a long distance away and stretched out straight on the ground close together. One of the most peculiar events was with reference to Mrs. Wells’ win- dow curtains. When the storm struck the house she had a lace curtain over a window. Immediately after the storm she found this lace curtain tied in a bow knot round a_ fence post. This seems {ncomprehensible and we will not attempt to explain it. Why She Was Safe. A fellow was looking over a hedge watching a maiden milking a cow in an open field, when suddenly he spied a young and excited bull, with its head lowered and tati cocked high in the alr, rushing madly toward her. The fellow called out to warn her of the approaching danger, but she just glanced at the bull and then went on milking calmly. Still the infuriated animal rushed toward the dauntless maiden, and then, when it was almost upon her, it stopped dead short, gave a loud bel- low and galloped away again to the farther side of the meadow. The man now ventured to ask the girl how she knew the bull would not touch her. “Oh!” was the gentle reply. cow’s his mother-in-law!” “this Colored Views. “T tell you for a modern business man Black is white.” “That’s because he’s green yet.” “I don’t agree with either of you. I found him rather blue this morning.” “Oh, that was on account of a per- sonal reason. He is so sensitive about turning gray so soon.” He Was a Record-Breaker. An carnest clergyman one Sunday morning was exhorting those who had anxious and troubled consciences to be sure and call on their pastor for guid- ance and prayer. “To show you, my brethren, the blessed results of these visits with your pastor,” said he, “I will state to you that only yesterday a gentleman of wealth called upon me for counsel and instruction; and now to-day, my friends—to-day he sits among us, not only a Christian, but a happy husband and father.” A young lady in the audience whis- pered to a matron: ‘“Wasn’t that pret- ty quick work?” WECRCCRCECRUUCREREEUE ER O4O40' et mA bs SS $12. 50 TO $10. 50 In style and material worth just double. Seven boys entered their miniature airships for the annual kite-flying con testt, open to children of the public and parcchial schools, which took place yesterday afternoon in Geneset Valley Park. Interest was lent to the contest by an odd incident, showing that the birds of the air may be fooled by tht cleverness of man. Aling Brown hat a kite made in imitation of an Ameri can eagle, and when it spread its wings to the breeze and rode awwa} into the air it looked like a real “king of the air.” Indeed, so perfect was the imitatior thet as the beautiful kite soared ovet one of the trees in the park in rising two large kingfishers saw the strange fowl, and, uttering their shrill ery o battle left the tree and followed the kite high into the air. They wheeleo and circled around their new enemy but such was their awe of the majestic bird they did not venture to push hos tilities to the actual point of contact This eagle kite took the first prize. Superstitions About Babies. “You mothers,” said a college girl disdainfully, “have the silliest super- stitions about your babies. For my graduating thesis I am compiling the behv superstitions of the world’s ire. They’re the most ludicrous things. Listen: “In Russia they think a baby and a kitten can’t thrive in the same house. They kill the kitten as soon as the baby comes. “In Spain they won't let a baby un- der three see its reflection in a mirror. Otherwise they think it will grow up vain, proud and cruel. “In Roumania babies will wear blue ribbons around the left ankle to ward c# evil spirits. “In Hungary they think that if you dress a girl baby in red she will turn out bad. “In India it is good luck for a baby to fall out of bed. “Trish babies keep strands of wom- en’s hair in their cradles to protect them from sickness.” Lived Long on Simple Diet. For more than sixty-three years a woman in Readsboro, Va., has subsist- ed on a diet of crackers. Ever since she was ten years old she has eaten nothing else, and strange to say, she seems to have thrived on her queer meals. Crackers for breakfast, crack- ‘ers for dinner, crackers for supper, until, she says, it is scarcely to be wondered at that her friends call her “Pally.” OFFICIAL PROCEEDINGS OF THE TOWNSHIP BOARD OF Ls EQUALIZATION TOWN OF GRAND RAPIDS. of Town Clerk, Town of Grand Office Rapi Itasca County, Minnesota, June nd, 1908.
