If it be your aim, brother Optic, to get into a political fighton that score, cut it out and advocate something on which everybody is not agreed. igre, — In ALL seriousness it is to be re- gretted that the publisher of the Itasca County Independent permits a pernicious influence to control the policy of his paper. For two whole years George H. Spear, as county attorney, bent every energy to con- vict C. C. Miller ex-county treasurer, of malfeasance in office, but without Two of the strongest. cases, in Spear’s estimation, were tried be— before juries, both resulting -in ac- quittal. He spent thousands of dollars of the taxpayers money in his prosecution of Miller. He could not make a case, and yet he continues to try Miller through the Independentin order to keep himself in the public eye and at the same time belittle Prose- cuting Attorney Thwing. If Miller guilty, as alleged, why did not Spear show the convicting facts to a jury? Asa matter of fact, the bond- ing company offered to settle certain alleged shortages rather than go to svurt, because it would ¢ost the company that amount to defend in the case. Reliable bonding companies do not wish to contest claims. as such proceedings only has a tendency to injure their business reputation. Came wandering back from their jour- neys wide— From their earth-wide pilgrimage. The snake liar hid bis face in shame And the fish liar meekly did the same. ‘The one lay prone in bitter grief While the other looked like a captured thief. “We are done forever with Ananias, Though we labored hard, he'll now deny us; ‘The goal we reached through the lies we . preached . Has been grabbed and gulped!”— One liar sereeched. To think that at last, through all we've passed, The glory is torn from our brows at last, And the laurels rest ou the puny breast Of Timid Tony—he lied the best. In chorus they said, as they sneaked into bed. “Before hearing this news we'd better been dead— We'll crawl upand cry and mourn tll we die Over the newspaper circulation liar with his circulation lie.” And the father of liars looked ten- derly down on his most accomplished son. while the boy, in glad response, proclaimed that he would‘never again | venture upon truthful premsies where a falsehood might possibly be made to | serve.
