Dee That was a fine speech of Goveraor Johnsun to the rivers and harbors congress at Washington. It showed a complete mastery of the subject of water routes as a dominating factor in the development of internal com- merce. A comprehensive grasp of public questions,-however does not wholly explain why staid and con- servative editors of the East are in- dulging in rhapsodies over the new man from the West. There must be something intensely fetching about the personality of this man Johnson of Minnesota.—Pine City Poker. There is my boy, and there are a whole lot of people begining to find it out. > Le 0 On Monday the magnificent squad- ron comprising the Atlantic fleet, under command of Rear Admiral Robey D. Evans, sailed for its trip of 14,500 miles. It was the largest na- val demonstration ever made by any government. The fleet comprises 16 battleships, and six torpedo boats. Parading in review before the pres- ident of the United States and salut- ing as they went, the stately white vessels drew anchors from the ren- dezvous ground of Hampton Roads and steamed out of the famous old Virginia capes and were lost to view on the southeastern horizon, filmy , tell-tale columns of black coal smoke being the last. visible vestige of the departing fleet. At ten knots speed they went, turning their backs on the coast which so long has been their home and headed for the eas t- ern end of the West Indies. —— “23” FOR J. ADAM BEDE Heis Away Getting an Education When Congress meets—Asks Delegation to Draw His Seat and.he Gets No. 23 ‘The members of congress from this state who weré present at the open- ing session of the sixtieth congress, attending to their duties and the people’s interests, have perpetrated a cruel joke on Congressman Bede of this district. As was stated in our jast issue, Mr. Bede was not present, as he ought to have been, when the house met. He was up through Michigan getting an education, and he sent word from Saginaw that he gould not be at the national capitol for a few days and asked the Minne- sota delegation to “draw his seat.’’ The delegation, according to advices from Washington, proceeded to draw, but instead of getting him a good place. the seat they drew for Adam was No. 28. The expression 23" as everybody knows, means to skidoo or get out. One authority states that it originated from the fact that in numbering the rooms of a large hotel the number 23 was unin- and there are no lawyer's fees in sight. Both capital and Jabor know that the United States uniform stands for the ‘‘square deal” and can- not be used by selfish interests to further lawlessness.—Duluth News Tribune. Right you are. Following is a fulltext of the pro- pased measure: “From and after the approval of this act no import tax duty shall be collected upon white print paper or white book paper or upon any of the materials and ingredients used in the manufacture or Somipnstiae of the same, The ranks of the old veterans of the civil war are thinning fast. We can hard- ly bring ourselves to believe that the delegation wauts Adam to be kicked out. They would much prefer it to be done decently and in order, but there is no doubt that the drawing of 23 by the delegation was a delicate hint to Adam that inasmuch as he spends much of his time away from the capitol, it wouldn’t matter much, as faras the interests of this state are concerned, whether he ski_ dooed all the time or not. The dele- gation exhibited a fiue sense of hu- mor in making the draw, but Adaw doubtless regards it asa cruel joke, for “23—Skidoo” is likely to bob up and cause him trouble in the cam- paign approaching. a Arena Repub- lican, A tape measure moupted silyer case makes, a-nice. present for your mother, sister or sweetheart.
