LONDON, Dee. 21.~-The Daily Standard prints conspiewously g statement that Great Britain has decided to establish’ a new naval Squadron in the Pacific The paper says the squadron will be composed of the present fourth cruiser squadron and six cruisers of the county class, so called because the vesselg are named after the counties of Great Britain The squadron, which will be called the Pacific and North American squadron, will, it is expected, have its base at Esquimalt The scheme will become effective in May, 1908. LONDON, Dec. 21.—The announcement in the Standard this morning regarding the new naval squadron in the Pa- cific has been received with widespread interest. At the naval department no confirmation nor denial has been given, and the facts are believed to be absolut correct This afternoon several papers make comments on the new plan. One paper insinuates that there is more to the war talk between the United States and Japan than appears on the surface, and the paper Concludes. with the statement: “Does it mean that England will assist Japan in case there is war with the United States?” Other papers comment differently, They take the stand that, as the United States is gradually creeping upwards with its navy, England should also f suit The Atlantic fleet going to the Pacific coast, and the probability that a perma- ined on the Pacific shores adjacent to the United States make it plain why England should nent squadron will be n adopt the same tactics. As to Esquimalt b anent basis, this is borne owt by the recent announcement that marines and a com- g the pe plete complement of officers and troops will be stationed at that point. For years a base was maintained at Esquimalt. A most elaborate arrangement of mines and secret passages was Maintained. These are now closely watched, and the plans and arrangements of the fortified place on Vancouver island are known only to a few of those connected with the war de- partment “HERE IS A FRESH vid to her exeestioners "But Councilmen Solve It by Getting Busy Searching for SAYS BOY RAN OFF Traps—Council Will be Asked to Authorize Pur- WITH HIS $35 CITY MORGUE AND == ~ pea ale manity in general, Ber y/ Without it, owr success i be woodsman, reached is m re fe reported to the police that a gang of news > sag rls bate Drs.
