Suear Laks, Dee. 10. A word of warning to lovers of big game. It will be but a few years when the deer will bea thing of the Dast at the rate the timber wolves are slaughtering them at the present time. I was out in the woods a few days ago and found carcasses of four deer which were freshly killed by wolves and partly eaten. On the lakes where I live I saw the tracks of twelve wolvesin one bunch. When the lakes are frozen over and that number get aftera deer he has no chance of escape. The bounty is small compared with other counties. St. Louis county alone pays more than the state and county both pay here. Now if the county commis- sioners would get together on this proposition and raise the bounty $2.50 the state would owillingly pay $2.50, making $15.00 for a full growo wolf, it,would encourage the hunters and trappers to go after them. Last Sunday Mr. Ander Saylter had | the misfortune to lose one of his team of fine driving horses. He was driv- ing from Grand Rapids to the Oliver mining camp at Sugar Lake. The horse was taken sick when he reached Hughes’ place and died in two hours. Mr. Hughes has just completed bis barn and basement which are as fine as any in the county of their kind. The Oliver Mining Co. are building acampand making preparations to drill the Jerdin place. H. Interesting Lecture. Henry Laurens Call, of Boston, Mass., member of the ‘American Association for the adyancement of science” will deliver his noted ad- dress upon the ‘Concentration of Wealth” at Opera House, in thiscity, next Thursday evening, Dec. 26th, 1907. Mr. Call. although a comparatively young man, has attained an enviable distinction as a reconized authority upon economic subjects. It was be- cause of his prominence in this field that he was invited to read a paper before the “American Association for the Advancement of Science,” at Columbia College, New York City, December 27th, 1907, which paper forms the subject of his present lecture. Among the writings of Mr. Call, which have attained distinction are “The Coming Revolution.” “Justice.” “The Trust Situation,” “The. public Highway “Tne Concentration of Wealth iteply to Criti etc. While thus preeminently a student and writer, yet his knowledge of con- ditions in this country has not been obtained alone from the studies of the closet. On the contrary few men of the age have viewed life sy extensively in all its aspects. Uis early years were spent upon farms both in Llinois and Kansas, after which he obtained his cducation iu western universitics, became ap educator and lawyer, locating in the capital ofa western state, where he soon attained a national reputation, as the attorney for many large cor- porations. He was retained as the attorney fur the brewing* companies in practically three-fourths of all the so-called “original package” cases, tried in that state, following the celebrated ‘‘Leisey vs. Hardin’! de- cision in the Federal courts of Lowa. Mr. Call spent several years in travel, visiting practically every state of the Union, closely nivesti- gating economic conditions in every section, thereby endeavoring to sat- | isfy himself of the real conditions prevailing throughout the country. Afterwards be moved to New York City, engaging in the practice of his profession. He became an attorney for large corporations, and afterwards himself a capitalist. manufacturer, and large employer of labor; all the while gathering.an experience fitted | to enable him to judge of social and economic conditions in the United States from every view point, and to speak with more than ordinary dis- eernment upon these subjects. Mr. Call is now devoting his entire time to writing and lecturing upoa economic subjects and will be beard in practically every state of the Uniou during the present season.
