Philbin WIIr Be Given New Place on E. M. It is rumored in Duluth that Vice President D. M. Philbin of the East- ern Minnesota road wjll wove to Du- luth about July 1 to establish offices as general manager of the department of mines of the Great Northern road. At that time the Eastern will bass in- to the Great Northern system, and it is understuod that the operating de- partment wi!l come directly under the general operatiug department of the parent system. It is said to be quite likely that Assistant Superintendent Howard of the Eastern will be made division superintendent under the new arrangement. The Hill interests have acquired enormous mineral holdings on the Mesaba and western Mesaba ranges, especially during the past year. They- have become so large that is said a special department has become neces- sary to attend to them properly. Moreover, it is intimated that it is the policy of the road to push the de- velopment of the iron lands it has ac- quired if possible through furnace in- terests much.more rapidly than has been done in the bast. ‘The fact that independent consum- mers of pig iron and ore are rapidly becoming interested in the production of ore on their own account, and the already large traffic that has been built up by tbe road, makes it impera- tive, 1t is said, to give the iron inter- ests “more authoritative attention then they bave received in the past. Mr. Philbin is the veteran iron ore railroad man in the Lake Superior re- gion, with the exception of Vice Presi- dent Fitch, of the South Shore, under whose direction he grew up in the business. He is looked upon as the best man the Hill people could possi- bly place in charge of their iron inter” ests. {t is uuderstood that Louis W. Hill, who, as president of the Eastern Min- nesota, has had executive charge of the iron ore interests, will tur this responsibility over to Mr. Philbin, and the latter ia turn will be largely relieved of the responsibility and du- ties connected with the operating de- partment. Louis W. Hill is said to have suc- ceeded to the duties formerly devol- ving upon James N. Hill, who will take a several years’ vaction in Eur- ope to recover his health. Louis Hill continues as assistant to the president of the Great Northern, though he assumes executive charge of the Mon- tana Central and Wilmar & Sioux Falls companies in addition to the duties he has been preforming, which are said a great deal of the time to be practically those of the president of the system. Jellison Not Disheartened Jesse L. Jellison put inabusy day compaigning in this city yesterday, says the Duluth News Tribune. ‘Today he returns to his home’ in Co- hasset, and from there will go to the rapge towns, visiting Hibbing first. He will speak again at the West Du- luth Republican club on the 18th inst. It is his intention to make Duluth his headquarters in the future. Speaking of his meeting at the Arm- ory, last Monday night, Mr. Jellison said: “True, there were only afew men present, but-they were men of intelli- gence, men of brains, who had come to hear the issues of the day discussed. ‘The idea was conveyed in the evening paper that Iam an old man, and be- ing in that pitiful, condition assumed to aspire to the candidacy for con- gress. “I was referred to as a cruiser, Jum- berjack, soldier and loborer.
