} { DECIDED TO BUILD. e Special Meeting of School District No. 1 * Decides to Build High School, The small attendance at the special school meeting held Monday evening last cannot be taken as other than an implied Compliment to the present school board. It is certainty a fact that all the citizens of Grand Rapids ure very greatly interested in the wellfare of our public schools and es- pecially concerned in the construc- tion and logation of the proposed new high school, and yet the attendance atthe meeting would not indicate tbat such an interest exists. We must therefore conclude that the peo- ple havé great contidence in the good judgment, integrity and economy of the members of the board. The Her- ald Review believes that this confi dence is not misplaced, and yet, as one of the members remarked, a large attendance of the people on such oc sasions gives added zeal and encour agement to the officers who have such affairs in charge. Without proper at tention from the public officials may come to feel that their efforts are not appreciated and are wont to grow carele: While the school board had authority to proceed with the erec tion of a building it was the desire of the members to get the opinion of taxpayers as to the amountof money to expend un the structure and the selection of a site. These propositions were discussed at some length and it was finally decided by vote to erect nt suitable building on a site to be se- lected by the board, the building not to exceed in cost the sum ot $30,000. ‘The levying of a tax will be acted up- on officially at the regular yearly meét- ing tobe heldin July. The board has in view several suitable blecks for the buildtng that can be seeured at very moderate figures, and the diffi- cult question for them to decide will be which to select. Treasurer Krem- er of the board made a_ verbal state- ment of the financial condition of he district which showes that, the extra tax levy will fall very hghtly on each individual taxpayer. AGAIN IN ITASCA COUNTY. Capt. Maliman, Who First Explored the Arcturus now at Snow Ball. Capt. John Mallman, who was a familiar visitor to Grand Rapids four and five years ago, wheu he had charge of exploratory work on the Arcturus, is again operating in this county. ‘The Cleveland Cliffs Tron company of Ishpeuiin: Michigan re secured property in section 11-56-23 on which tuey have already done considerable test pitting. Capt. Mallman has charge of the work. In company with J. E. Jopling of Ishpeming, a member of the company, Captain Ma liman was in town Thursday after two diamond and three churn drills which had been shipped by rail to to this point. The captain says work will be pushed vigorously until the company is fully satisfied of what is denosited beneath the surface. Cole McDonald of Duluth will aiso put ip two diamond drills in that vicinity for the same company. Exploratory work is very satisfac- torily progressing on section 3-55-25, under direction of Capt. Wallace for the Corrigan McKinney company. Kremer & King and W.C. Gilbert of Grand Rapids are duing some pros- pecting on the swt section 3, Dy and they appear to be well satisfled with the showing thus far made. ANNOYED BY COMPLAINTS Are the Minnesota Legislators at the Nation- al Capital, Several members of the Minnesota delegation are confronted by com- plaints from their constituents which ure causing them much annoyance ' a Washington dispatch. This is particularly true of the Twin City re- presensatives. These complaints are made in connection with the Morris bill, it being charged by persons in St. Paul and Minneapolis interested in the fact of the bill provi- ding for the disposal of the Indian timber in the state that they have been assessed to maintain a delegation here for the purpose of securing its passage before adjournment. The fact that these assessments have con- tinued is used as a basis for the com- plaint that the delegation is derelict in its duty in not vigorously insisting upon action. A member of the dele- gation in discussing this matter said that the complaints received were al- togebhér unwarranted. He referred to tne fact that a delegation from Cass lake has been here for several weeks, but the Minnesota members are in no way responsible for it, and that the visiting delegation can in no way aidin the passage of the Morris bill. -**‘When the visitors gave their testimony before the Indian commit- tees of the house and senate,” said this member. “their work was fin- ished. All that they conld possibly do was to present facts. Sentiment That Strongly Favors Public Parks and Drives Prevails. It is quite apparent that the people of Grand Rapids are alive to the ne- cessity of immediate action in the mat- ter of acquiring: public parks for the village. It is certain that property can never again be acquired so cheaply as at present, and the opportunity should be taken advantage of at once. Around Crystal Lake the road is now more then half built and the expense necessary to complete the entire boulevard around the lake would be very little when compared with the great benefit which the public would derive from it. This would make one of the most beautiful drives im- aginable. ‘The village already owns quite a tract of land on the north side which was donated for park purposes. The balance neeessary to complete the park and boulevard could easily be acquired. STEAMBOAT EXCURSION the travel over it f( Northern points is heavy. Arrangements have been made whereby the people of Grand Rapids will have an opportunity to make a trip down the majestic Mississippi, to Swan River, or to Missisippi Landing, more properly speaking, next Sunday morming returning in the evening. This will be a most delightful excur- sion, and should be taken advantage of. ‘he Irene will accommodate only about 100 people and tickets will be sold during the week for the trip. When one hundred tickets have been sold no more can be had. The price has been made very reasonable, 40 cents for the round trip. Refresh- ments will be served, ard all who de- sire may bring along Innches, and it is expected most everybody will do so Band Uniforms New uniforms have beén ordered for the members of the Grand Rapids Brass band which are expected to ar- rivein a short time. ‘The boys have been accumulating funds for this pur- pose for some time past, but are still short of the required amow.t about fifty dollars. In order to raise this sum they have decided to give a dance at Village hall next Friday eve- ning.
