Gambling should ‘be no more, social outcasts of both sexes should be seen upon our streets and alleys never again; saloons should conform strictly to the spirit and letter of the law. Nason was in town this week having just finished his logging on the Misssssippi. ..Considering the outfit and’ length of time at work he has had a most- satisfactory season. Commencing: on December.14 and winding up on February eoth, with one team and_ three to four men, he put in over five hundred thousand feet, and cleared a neat sum on the operation. How It Was Done. The legislator who pray that clause of the Lord’s prayers which says: ‘Lead us vot into temptation,’ should ask to be excused from serving on the legislative log and lumber committee. if he bea man of shifting principles and belives in helping to answer bis own prayer. The Minnesota senat committee on logs and lumber has gone on record for the year 1899 as favorable to spoils, spoiled politics and spoiled politiciaus by a majority of five ty two. This is about the percentage of clears and culls in the house and senate commit- tees of 1891 when the luimbermen_be- fore attempted to have the method of log scaling reformed. The present senate committee is composed of seven members, namely: E. L. Hospes Stillwater; G. P. Wilson, Minneapolis Cc. B. Buckman, Little Falls: E. B. Hawkins, Biwabic; L. H. McKusick, Pine City; P. McGovern, Waseca; C. C. McCarthy, Grand Rapids. The two members first mentioned voted fore the legislation mentioned. The five following opposed it. Mr. Wilson was the framer of the bill. The problem this log sealing bill put before this committee was simple “etlough>” It was this: ‘To reduce tbe scaling fees from five cents to four cents per thousand and to intsilute some reforms that would make ac- curate what is now a Very inaccurate method of scali The objection of the committee was primarly on the first mentioned measure. When the lumbermen tinally submitted to the large fee, but asked for a more accur- ate scaling plan, this was refused tive nyas of the committee showed Messrs. Wilson and Hospes favorable to the bill. Mr. McCarthy ae to within 24 hours of the commit- tee’s. adverse vote expressed himself unqualifiedly favorable to the bill. Mr, Buckman was willing to voue fot the bill if his vote would make a ma- jority vote that way Tbe other three members were against the bill. Iu fact one of them quiet chided Mr. Wilson for bis foolishness by not with- drawing the bill when there would be “a thousand dollars in it for him’ should he doso. Mr. Buckman did not. explain his change of heart. Mr. McCarthy explained that one ot the other members had asked him to vote against it, because he (the other member) had voted for McCarthy’s dog lien and anti-time check bill, and wanted him to reciprocate this way Now no man who cares for his putation as a man of truth and intelli- gence dare tu say that, the lumber- men’s demand in this bill is not fair, just and eminently tight. The man | who hedges on this proposition — or dénies it must be counted a suspect. as to honesty and truthfulness. That the surveyor generalish, especially of the principal lag distridt of | Min- nesota, is an office stuffed with plun- der taken from lumbermen, isa his- torical fact that no one attemps to deny. Itisso overstuffed that the surveyor-genera] are attempting to share the overstuffing with such men, legislators or others, as can do the most good in: keeping the office aboye a base of houest remuneration. Here was the ‘dpportunity of all op- pogtunities for this comimittiee to have rid Miunesota politics of this source of curruption. . The governor bad recommended such riddance. apolis district is a persona von grata pect to complete the task in about ten days. Our old friend C. As a jobof political house cleaning and a slap at the énemy combined this measure offered a rare opporitunty for action. But the dirty politician ‘oves a dirty house. His head is long enough to see that to beat the enemy out of this plunder this year will be to beat his party out of it in the year to come. ‘This is putting his case in‘ the ‘best possible Jight.
