Wilder and Neal Hickey, have reason to feel this morning that their friends are with- out hmit, and in. turn the two hun- dred guests who ieceived royal en- jtertainment at the hands of the | popular landlords are convinced that \the Gladstone will continue to grow jin popular favor while it remains un- der their management. In response to a general invitation extended this week the formal opening under the new proprietors took place last mght when a dance and banquet was furnished, “without money and with- out price,” as to the guests, but not so with the genial entertainers, The banquet. was one of the most elabor- ate ever spread in Itasca county, and would reflect credit upon the most pretentious hotel inthe state, The spacious dining room and rotunda as weil as the private and public parlors were crowded from 10 p, m. o’clock until after 2a.m. ‘The only possible suggestion of improvement that might be made was the scarcity of room to conveniently accommodate the large number of people, notwithstanding the generous proportions of Hotel Gladstone. Music by Grand Rapids orchestra inspired the dancers to the fullest enjoyment of the occasion, and the event will long be remembered as one of the social’ gatherings i Grand Rapids that has aided materirlly to make this prosperous village a most delightful place in which to reside. Village Hall, April 20th. ‘The play,of “Uncles Tom’s Cabin” as been acted throughout the country, thousands of times and to day is the most popular drama in the land, The most exact Christan people never hes- itate to witness its rendition which they always do with great pleasure and delight.’ Lessons on morality and vertue may be learned by its teach- ing. Messrs. Young Bros. have engaged a strictly first class company of ladies and gentlemen to present the ever favorite drama, and they promise to give the amusement loving people of this city a grand production in every way; good music. fine scenery, and have arranged to prese nt between acts the marvelous M agmiscope repro- duction all the Naval battles of the late War. On their annual tour of inspection and recreation this year the editors of Northern Minnesota will spend a day im Grand Rapids to be entertained by our eriterprising citizens. These an- nual editorial outings are very. pleas- ant affairs for the editors and very rarely result in any searious harm to the communities visited. The boys expect to be fed and watered without expense to the association. But that doesn’t cost much, and it is worth the price demanded just to see a crowd of public-spirited opmion-moulders enjoy life once a year. No great material benefit will follow in the wake of the excursion beyond a general promotion of friendly acquaintanceship between neighoorig communities. It is hard- ly to be expected that the editors from Carlton, St. Louts, Beltrami, Cass, Crow Wing, Aitkin, Wadena and other counties who may visit us will return to the sacred precincts of their respective sanctums and write long- windee articles urging all farmers and other wealth-producers to pull up and dig out for Itasca county. As a matter of courtesy and public enterprise it will be meet and proper to give our journalistic friends a royal reception and a rousing enrertainment. THE REASON WHY Woodsmen This Spring- The Grand Rapids Magnet has diS- village is not enjoying the patronage other years, and seeks a reason there- for. It finds that ‘Twin City merch- ants are the scamps responsible for this falling offintrade. Inquiry from those who are in a position to know positively whereof they speak con- vinces the Heral1-Review that the merchants of St. Paul and Minneape- lis have not been instrumental in placing one railroad ticket in the camps of this county. In former years competition between the East- ern Minnesota and the St. Paul & Duivth railways has been very ani- mated, and special inducements were offered to men in the woods to make atrip to the cities, This year it is far different. No tickets have been placed in the camps except in the vicinity of Hibbing, where the St. Paul & Duluth is in a position tocom-| pete for passenger traffle with the Great Northern. Very. few of these men took passagé, from Grand Rap- ids, and the reduction in rates offered was an inconsequential sam, Why, then, the noticeable reduction in all ines of business? The Herald Re- view willtell you. The narrow-mind- ed Magnet determined.to injure the town in every way possible because it was unable to receive public patron- e, and advertised this village as be- g infested with thieves and robbers -every class. . in the woods be- : convinced tMat the Grand Rap- ‘ids cf 1899 was nat the same old town they bad patroni in years gone by, and as a result'they went elsewhere to spend their earnings. This out- come ofthe Magnet’s misrepiesenta- tion is only what might be looked for, If the business men feel like tolerating such wholesale villification ing that cannot be surpassed, calk on Tasca Mercantile Co, of their community, they should con- tinue to support the Magnet.
