Reduced by Six Months. stripes, solids, novelties. The concerns, the Bath (Me.) Iron Works and the Federal Shlpbullfling & Dry Dock Co., Kearny, N. J, bidding on four 1,630-ton destroyers, | offered to complete them in 18 months, whereas 24 months is the | shortest construction time under present contracts. The Bath Iron Works bid $5,837,000 on each of two destroyers, the first | to be completed in 18 months and the second two months later. The | concern asked $4,898,000 each if adjustments were made during con- struction for changes in most of ma- | terial and labor. The Kearny yard bid $5,700,000 on each of two destroyers, to be completed also in 18 and 20 months, respectively, with an alternate bid of $5.277,000 allowing for adjust- ments. Bids were asked in advance of final congressional action on pending ap- propriations with a view of saving months in time of construction. The four destroyers were in- cluded in the Navy's original ship- building program of 24 ships for the next fiscal year, which subse- quently was expanded. Four other destroyers are expected to be as- signed to navy yards. ‘The record appropriation for the l sea forces now before Congress in- | cludes more than $100,000,000 to be expended solely to speed the trans- formation of steel into battlecraft. As fast as the fleet reinforce-| ments slide down the ways at more | than a dozen crowded shipyards, keels for other craft will take their place. | North Carolina’s Launching. 1 ‘Two weeks hence the Washington's twin-sister, the U. S. S. North Caro- lina, under construction at the New York Navy Yard for two and a half years, is to be launched. Other vessels to be launched or completed this year are destroyers and auxili- aries. Despite the new pressure for speed, the two battleships will not be ready to take their places with the fleet for more than a year.| Nevertheless, .day and night work will save months in their completion and in the building of the six addi- tional battleships already laid down or soon to be under construction. American warship production was thrown into high gear by the new- est turn of events in Europe—with- out awaiting final congressional ap- proval of the extraordinary appro- priations and special legislation | asked by President Roosevelt. Under instructions of Assistant Secretary Lewis Compton, some of the eight navy yards engaged in shipbuilding already have started day and night work. Fifteen thou- sand civilian workers are to be added within three months. New Featherweight 1940 Palm Beach Suit Lighter, by many ounces, than ever before.
