And South America Draws Attention * By the Assoctated Press. PITTSBURGH, May 20—Edwin F. Chinlund, president of Postal Telegraph, said today an increase in telegraphic communication be- tween the United States and South America showed the businessmen of this country were trying to cap- ture new markets to replace ones lost in Europe. In addition to the heavier volume of foreign traffic, we must also deal with sudden and extreme fluctua- tions in the day-to-day transmis- sion of intelligence.” The recent $5.000,000 loan grant- ed Postal by the Reconstruction Finance Corp., he said, will enable the firm to ‘“consolidate and strengthen” its position. NEW YORK, May 20.—The ommc try’s steel operations are estimated for this week at 73 per cent of ca- pacity, the highest since the week of January 29, this year, and an in- crease of 3 points over the previous week, the American Iron and Steel Institute announced today. The current level compared with 60 per cent a month ago and 485 per cent a year ago. In the last several weeks, acflvity in the industry has broadened at a pace comparable with the upturn-of last autumn, although present oper~ ations are still far below the 94.4 per cent mark recorded last November. Heavily increased demand for ex~ | port steel is credited as a major factor in the output upturn. |Curb Bonds DOMESTIC.
