G. C. Maynard, who installed the line, then built an embryo exchange with eight wires going to various points, one to the Capitol and one to The Evening Star. The paper received late news from Maynard every day just before going to press. By 1878 Maynard had installed 119 telephones between government buildings, business houses were beginning to accept the innovation and a permanent exchange was built. The telephone had become ane of the greatest necessities of daily life by 1913 when Hysong’s adopted the unique creed of one standard of service, the highest, to all regardless of fianncial circumstance. %Jafl//.{_ MARTIN W.
