NEW YORK, May 15.—The bond market hammered away at foreign issues from start to finish today, but domestic loans rallied with mild success after heavy morning losses. Foreign recessions ranged from fractions to more than 6 points near the close. Domestic liens gyrated in a range of more than 4 points. A few plus signs dotted the United States. Government lists, but losses, in the majority, ran as high as 1 point. Widest declines in the overseas division were scored by loans of Canada, Denmark, France, Italy, Norway, Belgium and Argentina. Francisco Sugar 6s tumbled 8 in the domestic division and smaller losses appeared for Illinois Central 43,s, International Paper 5s, Inter- national Telephone 5s and Ameri- can & Foreign Power 5s. NEW YORK CITY, May 15.— There was & good average gain in sales volume reported for March by independent retail hardware deal- ers in the United States. Compared with February, 1940, volume, the increase averaged 26.4 per cent and there was an average improvement of 02 per cent over sales for March, 1939, These increases, based on reports from 1,861 independent retail hard- ware stores, in 48 States and the District of Columbia, will be an- nounced in the semi-monthly mar- ket summary to be published tomor- row in Hardware Age. Sales for the first quarter or this year, as comrared with the same period in 1939, for the reporting stores showed an average improve- ment of 50 per cent. The 1861 stores reported a total sales volume of $20,262.861 in the period from Jan. 1 to March 31, compared with a total o1 $19,288,521, for the same stores in the first three months of 1939. March, 1840, volume for the 1,861 stores was $7.996,578, the March, 1939, figure being $7,981,689. Sales for the same stores in February of this year totalled $6,323,970. New Aviation Concern Chartered in Virginia By the Associated Press. RICHMOND, Va. May 13.—Con- tinental Aviation & Engineering Corp., with an authorized capitali- zation of $1,000,000 has been grant- ed a charter by the Virginia Corporation Commission. The new corporation, with prin- cipal offices in Richmond, was au- thorized to engage in the design- ing, manufacturing, purchasing and selling of aipcraft and all other types of motor vehicles and engines. The maximum number of shares of stock was fixed at 1,000,000 with a par value of $1 and land holdings were limited by charter to 100,000 acres. Officers were listed as Clarence Reese, Grosse Pointe, Mich., presi- dent; Lewis P. Kalb, Grosse Pointe, executive vice president; Arthur W Wild and James W. Kinnucan, De- troit, and Carl F. NEW YORK, May 15.—Electric Bond & Share Co. reported today its management had informed the Se- curities and Excrange Commission of a desire to work out integration problems by \conrerence to avoid court actions. In reply to a recent S. E. C. order charging the company’s cor- porate structure was unduly com- plicated, Electric Bond & Share contended its relation to subsidi- aries was “exceedingly simple.” Last March, shareholders were re- minded in the company’s quarterly report, Electric Bond & Share was cited by the S. E. C. to show cause why it should not comply with the 1935 Utility Holding Company Act requiring simplication of holding systems. For the three months ended with March, Electric Bond & Share showed a balance of $127,548 for the common stock compared with a deficit of $34,044 in the like 1939 period.
