S. Publishing Costs Curtailment of Wood Pulp Exports May Put Drain On Canadian Supply Extension of the European war to | Scandinavia may increase book uund other publishing costs in the United States, according to Commerce De- partment experts. More than 60 per cent of wood pulp imported to this country comes from the Scan- dinavian countries. In 1939 im- ports accounted for approximately 21 per cent of all wood pulp con- sumed in the United States. If the war cuts off imports' from Scandi- navia the effects would be felt here, it is estimated, in about two months. Last year Sweden, the world’s largest exporter of wood pulp, sup- plied 42 per cent of all wood pulp imported into the United States. Much of this is used in the publi- cation of books and magazines. Though Sweden still remains out- side the theater of military opera- tions the allied blockade and the naval warfare in Scandinavian wa- ters have interfered with the nor-| mal, flow of trade between Sweden and the United States. About 4 per cent of this country’s wood pulp im- ports comes from Norway. Canadian Shortage Possible. The United Kingdom and France look to Scandinavia for the bulk of their supplies of wood pulp and | newsprint. Because of the war| Great Britain and France are ex- pected to increase their purchases from Canada. As a result of these larger purchases by Britain and France a shortage in the supply of Canadian pulp is seen here as a possibility. This, too, would affect publishing costs in the United States. About 60 per cent of the news- print consumed in the United States comes from Canada. Stocks of wood pulp now on hand in the United | States are comparatively small. Finland's Shipments Drop. In 1937 Finland was the second largest exporter of wood pulp. Twelvé pulp and paper mills, in-! cluding five chemical pulp mills, are | located in the area unofficially re- ported to have been ceded to the| Soviet Union by Finland under the | terms of the recent Soviet-Finnish | peace agreement. Though Finland ' THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 17, 1940. continues to sell wood pulp to the United States shipments to this country are running substantially below the 1939 level. ‘Denmark, now controlled by the Nazi war ma- chine, exports little wood pulp or paper to the United States. The Commerce Departmen? is re- celving many inquiries from manu- facturers and others as to the prob- able effect on the domestic pulp and paper industry of the extension of the war to Scandinavia, Club to Hear Baukhage H.
