English Imports Reach Highest Point Since 1929 B the Associated Press. LONDON, April 17.—Expanded by war purchases abroad, England’s merchandise imports in March soared to the highest total since October, 1929, the British Board of Trade figures showed today Imports amounted to £108.543,354, against British exports of £41.455.815. The heavy import excess was piled up in face of British efforts to ex- pand sales in world markets to ob- tain exchange for war needs, in- cluding aircraft from the United States. The import total compared with £95,638,991 in February and £78,021,- 721 in March, 1939. March exports compared with £37,- 402,395 in February and £41,634,577 in March, 1939. For the first three months imports increased to £308.883947, a gain of £89.817,605 over the comparable 1939 period. Pxports were up only £799,- 730 to £117,928815. (The British pound is quoted officially at $4.0272-3'2. In the New York open market today it was around $3.48.) J,, April 17— The United States Rubber Co. dis- closed today a newly developed bullet-resistant, self-healing tire tube was being sold to foreign armies with the approval of the War and State Departments. F. B. Davis, Jr., president, told slockholders at the annual meeting the tube was believed to be “far superior to anything of its kind” in army use abroad. Davis declared that the tube in a test lost little of its air despite penetration by 29 rifle bullets of .30 caliber. One of the objectives of the Fed- eral authorities’ approval of the foreign sale of the tubes, Davis said, was the establishment of “factory facilities necessary to any emer- gency production for War Depart- ment vehicles.” He also revealed that the War Department had authorized the sale of the tubes to law enforcement agencies and recognized armored car companies engaged in the trans- portation of money and other val- uables. The Securities Commission grant- ed permission yesterday for the United Light & Power Co. to spend $505,175.37 on the purchase of its own outstanding debentures. Since January 23 United has spent $324,42952 in the purchase of its own debentures and deben- tures and preferred stock of United Light & Railway Co., a subsidiary. These purchases were made un- der an 8. E. C. rule germitting hold- ing companies to buy up a maxi- mum of 1 per cent of the total amount of each class of their se- curities without permission of the commission. Having reached that limit, United was required to ob- tain S. E. C. approval for additional acquisitions. To pay for the debentures United proposes to spend the remainder of $829,604.89 obtained from the sale January 23 of the securities and accounts of the Chattanooga Gas Co. and Fayetteville Nitro Gas Co. The commission explained that United could purchase its own de- bentures at a discount and conse- quently would derive a net profit. Washington Produce BI UTTER—93 score. T-19 Sheet Steel Price Cut Brings Setback in Rising Demand Movement May Start Moderate Buying Wave Eventually, Trade Feels By the Associated Press. NEW_ YORK, April 17.—Imme- diate effect of the surprise price re- duction on sheet and strip steel was a setback in a mild seasonal ime provement in demand, Iron Age said today in a weekly survey. “The fact the lower prices are sub- Ject to withdrawal at any moment,” the review added, “may eventually stimulate a buying movement of moderate proportions, though noth- ing approaehing the enormous cove erages of the ‘bargain days' of May, 1939, is expected because, for one thing. inventories in the hands of consumers and warehouses are much heavier than they were at that time. “The new base price of 190 cents & pound on hot-rolled sheets is $6 a ton above the low level reached 11 months ago.” Industry Off Guard. The cut in quotations, first an<: nounced by United States Steel Corp. subsidiaries, caught the ine dustry almost completely off guard. “In previous acute price weake ness,” the review declared, “rumors of concessions have preceded formal price reductions by periods of at least two or three weeks, but in this instance action was both swift and decisive, once it became known price concessions had been offered. “* * * The leading producer met the situation with more promptness than has been customary in the steel trade, Coverages for Export. “The affect on export prices, which v:ore advanced at the beginning of this month, is yet to be determined. There was heavy coverage for export at prices prevailing before the ad- 12| vance, and in the circumstances 8 temporary lull would have been ex- pected. Nevertheless volume is still good, with indications that more active warfare may create new de« mands from Europe. “Exports shipments are hampered by a lack of sufficient boats. Steel and scrap are piled up at Atlantic and Pacific ports awaiting shipment. Scrap prices along the seaboard are weak as a result, interior there is a little stronger feeling. A slight upward adjustment at Chicago raises the Iron Age scrap composite price 4 cents to $16.08, the first move upward since Oce tober.” Ingot production for the industry gained a point to 62 per cent of. capacity.
