A moment later the two men started for the temple at a run. There was no one to block their way. Even the guards at the outer gate fled in terror. As they entered the courtyard, a few frightened leopards raced past them. They had been ter- rified by the flames that devoured the wrecked airplane, a hundred feet away. Now the jungle lord, followed by Brown, ran for the main en- trance of the building. Even here there was no one to dispute their right to enter the sacred precincts. HE two littleé cubs did their best to keep at Mother Bear’s heels. It wasn't easy, for Mother Bear seemed to be absent-minded at times and to forget that the legs of a big Bear are ever so much longer than the legs of a wee Bear. So, thinking of other matters, she would be shufling aleng unmindful of the fact that the cubs ‘were having to gallop in order to keep up. And if they didn't keep up and she had to wait for them she some- times would lose patience. Then she would send them up a tree and go off. Always they looked carefully to make sure that Prickly Porky the Porcupine wasn't up in a tree before they climbed it. They might have known that Mother Bear wouldn't send them up a tree Prickly Porky was in, but they didn't think of that. The very fact that they had seen Mother Bear afraid of Prickly Porky made him a terrible fellow t§ them, far worse than he really was. There was no chance now that they ever would make the mistake of having anything to do with him if they could avold it. They had learned one most impor- tant lesson. It wasn't long afterward that they learned another. It was s lesson in politeness. They. were traveling along an old wood road when whom should they meet but Mother Skunk and at her heels four children. It was a wholly unexpected meeting. It was o & curve of their road. Neither ~ BRUNETTE AND VANDENBUSH POPPED UP IN MONROE, WIS. mother was aware of the presence of the other until they came face to face. Both stopped abruptly. Of course, the two little Bears and the four little skunks also stopped. Ther for the second time in their short lives the two little Bears were astonished. They expected to see these little strangers hurry out of the way. Instead of that, Mother Skunk lifted her big, bushy tail until it was straight up in the air, like a banner. Each little Skunk lifted his or her tail in exactly the same man- ner. There stood the five, with their tails held aloft. Mother Bear growled to the cubs to follow her. Then she quistly stepped out ef the rosd. ©f INSIDE LOOKIN® OUT, T00/ COUNTS UP ROUGHLY NOW F'R GOOD 0’ BROADWAY ANARLENE / course, the cubs followed. Then Mother Skunk moved on and the four little Skunks followed. They didn't hurry. They didn’t hurry one bit. They moved on and around the bend in the road as if they had all the time in the world and as if the Bear family whom they had just met were of no importance whatever. They were very polite and they minded their own business. Mother Bear was the same way. She minded her own business and was just as polite as Mother Skunk. As soon as the Skunk family had peased Mother Bear went back to the road and continued on her way. At e last the curiosity of one of the little Bears could be held in no longer. “Why did you step aside for one so much smaller than yourself?” asked this little Bear. “Out of politeness,” replied Mother Bear. Her voice was deep and rum- bly-grumbly. “Out of politeness. There are some people with whom it pays to be polite. It avoids a lot of unpleasantness. Whenever you meet a8 member of the Skunk family be polite.” “But,” said the little Bear, “you are 30 big that she couldn't possibly have killed you.” Mother Bear chuckled. “No,” said ¢ l she. “No, she couldn't have really hurt me, but she could have hurt my feelings dreadfully. I could have killed her by just a pat from one paw, but it wouldn't have been worth while. She knew I could kill her, so she was polite to me. I knew she could make it dreadfully unpleasant for me, so I was polite to her. When you are polite to another the other will almost always be polite to you. There are some people with whom ft always pays to be polite. The Skunks are among them. There is some- thing for you to put away in your heads and never forget. You re- member that the other dsy we met é ¢ Jimmy Skunk, and I told you about the bag of unpleasant scent he car- ries. All Skunks carry this scent, even the little ones. “No matter how big you grow, al- ways be polite to a Skunk, and always avoid Prickly Porky the Porcupine. It will save you a lot of trouble.” “Yes'm,” replied the littie Bears. (Copyright, 1937 Twizzler Answer. Moses was the daughter-of-Pharaoh's son. You see, the punctuation makes all the difference.
