HELP AN D SITUATIONS L)O ANITA THE STORY SO FAR. Carol Clayton, engaged to wealthy Hartley Madison, falls in love with Duke Bradley, hand- some young bookmaker, to whom she is paying $76,000 debt in- curred by her father before his death. Her luck at the track 1s phenomenal, with the result that Duke, through whom she places her bets, is all but wiped out. In order to recoup, Duke per- suades Hartley to place bets through him. Carol thwarts him in this and he is infuriated with her. She, in turn, is humiliated at the thought that he is in- terested in her merely as a con- tact with Hartley. At the Ken- tucky Derby she wins the final amount needed to repay the $76,- 000 debt to Duke in full. There is mo more need of seeing him; she is now free to marry Hart- ley . but the prospect fails to make her happy. CHAPTER XXI. Tt was pouring rain as the Saratoga Racing Special sped across Kentucky But Fritzie O'Malley, ordering break- fast in the diner, thought it was a golden day. She had never been one to neglect her meals, but she hardiy knew what she had ordered. She kept looking at the door, as if waiting for some one. She was. She must see Duke. She hoped he would come in alone. She hoped even more he would come in before Kiffie did. It was certainly Fritzie's day. Both her wishes were gratified. Duke walked directly to her table when he entered the car. “What's happened to you this bright end sunny morning?” he asked. “Take & gander at that for answer,” she said in a low voice. handing him & telegram. “Just got it from my trainer.” Duke let out a low whistle. “What's that old song about not raining rain but—Ilooks as if it were raining gold to you, I suppose.™ “It should do that, seems to me, if we handle this thing right and have a fifty-fifty break. If Lightning can do three quarters for three-eighths under Trestraint—well, old wise head on young shoulders, what do you say?” “Kiffle know?” 'Yes, I told him—but you know what he knows about horses dnd races. which is absolutely zero. Coming down the aisle was one sneeze after another, the never-failing announcement of Kiffie's approach. “Oh, you're here,” he said between sneezes to Duke. He should have known that he had no reason for being jealous, but as has always been the way with jealousy, it had no rela- tionship whatever with reason | n person,” answered Duke. “Won't you join us? | “Kiffie, dear,” cooled Fritzie, “drop your nonsense—we three have some- thing important to attend to.” | “What's the use of having me in— | T never can get on to your racing talk | and I'd hate horses even if they didn't give me hay fever.” “Well," said Fritzie, glancing around | the car, “I can't see any horses in | here. And whether you understand all we say or not, we want you here Kiffie groaned. How much, he won- dered, would this conversation cost him? “Look, Fritzie,” Duke returned to the matter in hand. fingering the tele- gram, “if you want to cinch the Hope- | ful, there's one sure way to do it.” “Which is—-7?" | “You know who's sitting up there? | ‘That's the answer—Dixie Gordon. He's free-lancing, you know. Put him on Lightning.” | “Of course. Oh, Dukie. duck, what | would I do without you? And why | didn't I think of that?” “Isn't he awfully rough?” put in | Kiffie. | “Rough enough to win,” said Duke. | Fritzie was one for direct action. | “'Oh, Dixie," she called out. “Come | over a minute, won't you?” | “Don't know why not,” he answered, | leaving his table for theirs. | “Have you met Mr. Kiffmeye: m\" fiance?” she asked. “‘Well, you've met him now. I've | He'll get heated After all, he bought Nature’s Purple Loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria). BY LILLIAN COX ATHEY. OW is the time to get better ac- quainted with the lovely purple loosestrife. From June until August you may find it in Eastern Canada to Delaware, and westward through the Middle States. It is also well known in Europe. It loves the wet meadows and the charm- ing watery places, also the ugly dit:hes and the bank streams. There are few stories among the flowers that are as complicated as that of the loosestrife. It is a bright- faced hostess, filled with the idea of hospitality and an abundance of nectar and pollen to serve her guests when they call. This flower has come to us from Furope. She has by her industry and #chemes amazing spread her children year by year farther around the United States. Her march is a color- ful one as her flowers are a bright magenta, or royal purple, sometimes pinkish purple. They are about one- half inch broad and crowded into whorls around long-bracted spikes. ‘The calyx is a deep tube that is ribbed and is five to seven toothed with little projections between. The corolla is composed of five or six faintly crinkled or twisted petals. They are in two whorls of five, and sometimes six, and one pistil which, if you please, occurs in three different lengths! The 2 to 3 foot stem is leafy and branched, the leaves growing op- posite along the stem and sometimes they even take to the whorl habit of three. Seems to forget I brought her up—acts as if I didn't know a thing. I'm going now to get some orange juice and put castor oil in it, but'like as not she won't take it.” She shook her kinky black head in distress. “Oh, yes, she will,” Duke said firmly as he rose from the table. “I'll give it to her. You just hustle the orange Juice along. You'll ind me in her stateroom.
