Federal funds to round out the Great Smoky Mountains Nationa] Park into an area of 436,694 acres would be- come available under legislation which the Senate approved yesterday at the instance of Senator McKellar of Ten- nessee. The Senate voted to authorize Fed- eral expenditures of $743,265.29, the amount needed to purchase 26,014 acres of proposed puk area in Ten- nessee. Engineering experts at the Agricul- ture Department announced with pride today they have perfected a “mechan- ical mole.” The machine, they said, will imitate on a large scale the pesky little under- ground animals that ruin the front lawn and golf greens by pushing up | ridges of grass and soil.
