A—18 *x¥ POSTAL RECEIPTS CONTINUE TO RISE July Volume Here Reaches $536,818, Compared With $525,260 Year Ago. BY EDWARD C. STONE. Postal receipts at the Washington City Post Office in July scored a gain over July a year ago when soldier bonus spending proved such a great factor in boosting trade here and all over the United States. July receipts in the Capital were reported today at $536,818.21, com- pared with $525,260 in July of last year. This was a gain of $11,558.21 from the sale of all kinds of stamps, handling of parcel post, registered mail, money orders and from other sources. The fact that normal conditions prevailing in July this year were suffi- cient to offset the abnormal bonus ex- penditures in the same period a year ago, pctures very clearly on what a souna basis business in Washington now 1s resting. The July report re- veals a reversal of the June figures, which were not quite up to the same month in 1936. Today's favorable statement covers the first month of the Government's new fiscal year. It follows the recent report that postal revenues at the City Post Office in the fiscal year 1936-37 amounted to $7,388,672, in comparison with total receipts in the previous fiscal year of $7,101,580, a gain during the 12 months of $287,- 092, and the highest yearly total reached since before the Wall Street crash in 1929. Individual monthly totals in the first seven months of the present year compare as follows with the like periods in 1936, four of the seven scoring gains: 1937, $577,503 581,899 685,946 615,897 588,407 June . 564,646 583,522 July 536,818 525,260 Potomac Power Net $4,789,773. The Potomac Electric Power Co. reports for the 12 months ended June 30, 1937, subject to audit, net profits of $4,798,773, after interest, amortiza- tion, depreciation, Federal income taxes and surtax on undistributed Rrofits. Provision for surtax on the undis- tributed profits for 12 months ended June 30, 1937, represents provision of $34,111 made in December, 1936, for the calendar year 1936, the report says. No provision has been made for surtax on undistributed profits for the tix months ended June 30, 1937. ‘The earnings statement for the last 12 months has just been made avail- able to Potomac Power security hold- ers, in accordance with requirements of the Securities and Exchange Com- mission. It covers the period after the effective date of the company’s registration statement for the $15,- 000,000 first mortgage 3'i per cent bonds which was filed a year ago, the bonds being sold shortly afterward. Marsh Made Unit Manager. David S. Bethune, agency manager for the Equitable Life Assurance So- ciety in Washington, has announced the appointment of John De Witt Marsh as unit manager, effective Au- gust 1. Mr. Marsh was previously associated with the firm as a unit manager in 1931 and 1932, and at that time was one of the society’s youngest man- agers. Since his return to the com- pany in November, 1936, he has made an outstanding record in the agency, having already qualified for member- ship in the society’s Century Club. He stands third in the agency in paid for life business. Mr. Marsh was born in Georgia June 18, 1907, and attended George Washington University in 1925. Acacia Club Meets in South. Announcement was made today by the Acacia Mutual Life Insurance Co. of a series of regional meetings of the William Montgomery Quality Club, membership in which is the mark of outstanding production and conserva- tion. During the past six months there has been an increase of 50 per cent in new membership. The District of Columbia Branch holds the largest membership in the club and its representatives at the Southern regional convention, to be held August 12 and 13 at Sea Island, Ga., will constitute the largest single group at any of the three gatherings. Washington agents who have earned the right to attend the meeting are: D. M. Aaronson, J. B. Allison, J. A. Barbeau, G. M. Beaton, Nathan Burns, W. B. Crossan, D. M. Crouch, W. C. Daniel, J. I. But that's not all. He went deep sea fish- ing and caught a fish which weighed 62)> pounds. Has a pocket full of snapshots to prove it, in case one doubts the size and weight of the catch. Harmer Reeside, manager of the Washington office of Westheimer & Co., New York Stock Exchange firm, leaves here Saturday for a three-week trip to Mexico City. He will be ac- companied by Hiram Westheimer, son of one of the firm’s partners. 1936. $612,593 578,005 601,077 634,837 572,633 January February March ..
