E HAVE mentioned many times that the player who wins at bridge is the one who gets swings in his favor. For instance, North was proud of his bidding on the hand here shown, and we agree with him that it was indeed fine. The result he obtained was superb. And yet we wonder if North would have boasted of the hand if West had happened to think of a club opening. ‘West, dealer. Both sides vulnerable. OONT YOU FEEL GOOD? South's two no trump was what might be called a dual- purpose bid. Pirst, with a fine fit for his partner's diamonds, he saw a chance for game in the event that the opponents had been fooling a litle. Or even if his partner’s overcall was weak, he realized that three diamonds would be reasonably safe. With a minimum opering, West of course, passed, and North's three no trump can only be described as a gambling but very brilliant bid. He *decided that South, his partner, must hold a diamond fit, and should a heart be opened, they would take the first nine tricks, if it should happen to include the ace. ‘When East doubled, South of course did not run; he liked no trump as well as anything else. And North, having bid three no trump, decided to stand by his guns, and he also passed. West opened the eight of hearts, | whereupon declarer quickly ran his nine tricks, making his contract, game (and rubber. The possibilities of the hand are interesting. For instance, if North ;hnd simply bid three diamonds in- | stead of three no trump East and West would probably have reached a four-heart contract, which they could have made without difficulty. But let's see what perfect defense would have done to three no trump doubled. Suppose West had opened the king of clubs and East played the eight. Now West would continue with the six and East would take the trick with the jack, providing himself with another entry. The nine of spades would be covered by de- clarer's jack and won by West's queen. A third club lead would put East in with the ace, and another spade would be shot through de- clarer’s king. Now West would make all his spades and the king of clubs, setting the three no-trump contract five tricks (Copyright, 1937.) Ancient mine workings and ruins indicate & Bronze age in Southern Rhodesia, South, Africa, according to the report of an investigating com- mittee appointed by the Rusape and Inyanga Scientific Association of Salis- bury. The object was to sift the nu- merous theories regarding an evidently advanced state of civilization at a re- mote period. The committee considers that the evidence points to a pre- historic intrusion by Arablc and Egyptian influence and that the min- ing for gold, copper and tin had a di- rect influence on Zimbabwe, site of the most remarkable of the ruins. The theory of a medieval civilization in Rhodesia was rejected by the commit- tee. W &;‘\'_Lg 4 :c?\\::;sflps? SAME. TODAY — THE SAME. 1 AT BEEN HERE /TOMORROW -1 GUESS SINCE. The Tuatera lizard is in circulation again, this time on the New Zealand 8-penny stamp. Time was, within the memory of persons still living, when it was plentiful, but the white man's dogs and cats, pigs and ferrets, have driven it to & few islets. The tuatera, found only in New Zealand, is the only living representative of a species of reptiles long vanished from the earth. It is about 18 inches long, and is remarkable for a rudimentary third eye. It has been called a living fossil because the old reptiles like it are fos- sils. The authorities at Wellington came to the conclusion that soon it would survive only as a picture on a stamp. /1 " 4 OH, BOY/ 1'M GOIN' RIGHT DOV R AN et 7 THAT /TVE ALWATS 7 Wk / YOU CAN GO, BUT NOT US / ‘mmE‘u.QéE SUCH A CROWD, YOU WONT BE ABLE TO GET WITHIN A MILE OF HIM./ Twizzler Answer.
