She is engaged to wealthy Hartley Mad- ison and Duke accuses her of marrying for money. Infuriated, Carol postpones her wedding and starts to play the horses so she can pay him her father's $76,000 debt. She challenges him to take her bets, although what Duke really wants is Hartley's business —a wish that Carol determinedly thwarts. Her luck is phenomenal, but on the racing special to Flor- ida, he warns her that she is heading for a nervous breakdown. Then Duke makes a daring move. He goes to New York and tells Hartley of Carol's condition. This, he knows, will bring him to Florida. Once at the track, Duke knows he will bet. CHAPTER XL Tip O'Brien, after the tenth person had asked him the same question, eaid he felt like the information booth at Grand Central Station, with one difference—he hadn't any informa- tion. All that Duke had told him was to cancel his reservation on the racing special. “Of course, he'll show up at Mi- ami,” he sald. “Whyever wouldn't he? Lots of other trains besides this one. And what's the matter with you, Fritzie, looking as if you were at a funeral?” Fritzie, who was holding her faith- ful Kiffie by one hand, placed the other on Tip's shoulder and pushed him out into the corridor, where they could not be overheard. “You don't need to hold anything back from Kiffie and me,” she said, “I was wondering—he’s taken an awful walloping this season. If he's wiped out—well, speak up, Kiffie. It was your idea as much as mine for once.” “Don’t seem he could help knowing anybody would stake him, who had a pile,” said Kiffie. "I would have, even when I was jealous of him—and now, when I ain't any more, I'd go the limit for him.” “He's out a plenty,” said Tip, “and I think his being absent without leave, a8 you might say, has something to do with it. But only temporary, of course—he said he was taking a flyer in futures—nothing else. But I'll bank on Duke turning up, and smiling when he turns.” “Only trouble with him,” said Frit- we, “is his heart is too big and his conscience too tender. Why, I've| known him to refuse bets where he | could have raked in his pile because he knew the other fellow hadn't a chance or couldn't afford to lose.” They had not heard the door of a eompartment open and turned in astonishment when they heard a| mocking voice.. “Who's dead?” It was Carol. “No- body alive has such things said about him. “Fritzie’s not the first to talk like that about Duke,” said Tip. ‘“And what I could tell after working with | him all these years!” “Wouldn't it be interesting if he were in the next compartment and heard all these eulogies?” said Carol. “He sn’t even on the train,” said the literal-minded Kiffie. “And no- body, not even Tip, knows where he is.” ‘How interesting!" said Carol, pass- ing them. “How long has he been strayed, lost or stolen? If there's an inquiry of any kind I can't be a wit- ness. I hadn't even missed him. They did not speak until she had gone beyond hearing. Then: “Like Tophet she hasn't,” Fritzie. “Bweet-ems,” asked Kiffie anxiously, *you didn't just tell me what you did s0 I wouldn't mind you and Duke being so friendly, did you? Seems to me people who have a case on each other don't act—" “You're a dear, Kiffie-lamb,” said Fritzle, “but you're the world's big- gest boob at times. Just ask Tip what he thinks.” “They're even dumber than Kiffie answered the all-seeing young man. I don't kmow where Duke is, but as for that stiff-necked, high-stepping, bad-tempered dame, she's so deceit- ful she'd lie to herself. At first I grudged her every cent she took in. Now I wish she'd clean us out, so we'd get rid of her for keeps. Come on— let’s go in and have ourselves a little game of poker. I don't like this neighborhood. She’ll be coming back any time and I don't want any more talk with or from he Rosetta was knitting when Carol re- turned to the compartment, opened her bag and took out her papers to work on her percentages. “Where'd you go, honey?” she asked. “I just walked through the other cars,” said Carol. “I saw some one get on who looked like & friend of mine I knew in London, and I thought said | the figures seemed to mean nothing. “I thought I saw some one who looked like Mr. Duke,” said Rosetta. Carol did not answer. “Don't you think it mighty strange, honey,” asked the unabashed Ro- setta, “his disappearing without a word? “Who has disappeared? I haven't missed anybody—seems to me that whole crowd of hoodlums is present and accounted for.” “Mr. Kiffmeyer is smiling all' over that face of his,” said Rosetta, “ 'cause he ain't with Fritzie. As if Mr. Duke cared for her! We know he don't, don't we?” “I not only do not know anything about Mr. Bradley's affections,” said Carol coldly, “I am not interested. Anl as for you, Rosette, why don't you try minding your own business for a while?” “‘Certainly, Miss Carol. what I'm doing.” “Another thing—I wish you'd stop that everlasting knitting. The click of the needles gets on my nerves. Suppose you step along and make friends with the porter—you're get- ting behind your schedule, seems to me. I want to be alone with my figures.” She waited until Rosetta had closed the door behind her before laying | down her pencil. She stared at the | figures for a moment, but they did not | seem to mean anything. She turned and looked out the window. She did not see the trees, the meadows, the villages which lay beyond. Where had Duke gone? Was he ill? Was he broke? Was he— 8he shook hergelf. What had come That's just “H.a v is ley! What are you do=- ing here?” over her? What concern of hers was it? She didn't wish him any harm, but she hoped she'd never see him | again. She rang the bell. When the | porter knocked she asked him to send Rosetta to her at once. She was bend- | ing over her papers, pencil in hand, | when Rosetta came in. “What do you mean, staying out | there so long?” she demanded angrily. | “Get in your corner and go back to your Kknitting. Why do you think I | brought you along except to have you look after me?” So Rosetta knit and Carel filled sheet after sheet of paper. But still As the train pulled into the station at Miami Rosetta, looking out of the window, gasped. “What on earth’s the matter with you?" asked Carol. “I swear to goodness I saw Mr. Mad- ison just now,” Rosetta answered. “Don’t be silly, Rosetta. He's in California.” “Well, has he got a twin maybe that I never heard tell of? ’Cause that man was his spittin’ imag Carol, fumbling in her purse for money for the porter, did not answer. Rosetta clutched her by the arm as they stepped from the car to the sta- tion platform. “Are you "Cause—" A man was hurrying toward them, arms outstretched. “Carol! Carol!” he called. She reached for Rosetta’s arm to steady herself. “Hartley!” she gasped. you in California? doing here?” Then she drew her breath sharply. Just behind him was Duke. ‘““‘Aren’t you glad to see me, darling?” asked Hartley, taking both her hands. “What are you doing here?” she de- manded. “Just decided I must see you, dear. Perhaps I shouldn” have surprised you like this, but Duke and I thought—" s “Oh, yes, Mr. Bradley! What, pray, has he to do with our affairs?” “Always glad to be of assistance to my friends,” said Duke gayly. “You know, I told you—" “I know what you told me and what I told you,” she began in a hard voice, then stopped. Hartley looked at her anxiously. He was thinking that Duke had not ex- aggerated. There was something de- cidedly wrong with her or she would not act in this strange fashion. He was deeply disappointed, too. He had thought she would be glad to see him. Instead, she seemed angry. He felt a hand on his arm. It reminded him of something. “Carol,” he said, “let me present Dr. Beard. Dr. Beard, this is Miss Clayton.” Carol nodded an acknowledgment of the introduction, but she did not speak. “Dr. Beard just happened to be coming down,” said Hartley in ex- planation, “and I wanted him to meet you. I'm glad of the chance that's thrown us together. You look tired and seem nervous. I think I'll ask him to look you over. [} “I'm perfectly all right,” said Carol. “Let's get out of here. If you'll just help round up my luggage, I'll be grateful.” Duke had come close to her and sure, Miss Carol? “Why aren't What are you THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON she'd tell Madison she was glad to see him. Suddenly Carol threw hergarms around Hartley and kissed him. “Oh, darling,” she said, “why didn’t you come sooner?” The doctor was watching, her with keen interest. Hartley beamed. He was still worried, but at least she was glad to see him. Duke stepped up to Rosetta. “Say,” he said, “she’s acting queerer than I expected even. What's the matter with her, anyway—do you know?"” “If you don’t know, Mr. Duke,” she said, “I'm not the one to tell you.” Carol knows that her opponent, Duke, has beaten her in this move of the game, but she is determtned not to let him know it. Naiure’; Chil;iren BY LILLIAN COX ATHEY, PETUNIA. {LOWER lovers are finding the showy blossoms of the petunia more and more valuable as a border or for massed planting. Each year new colors are added to the already large number. The petunia is an annual or peren- nial plant with many branches and of straggling growth. The plants we have today are considered hybrids and modifications of the original two- stem types. The leaves are alternate or opposite and very soft. The stems have a vis- cid substance on them that is objec- tionable to many. The colors range from white to light purple. There are few, it any, pure blues, reds or yellows The striped and ruffled ones, as well as the double ones, are just beginning to be plentiful. The little plant thrives on rich and poor soil alike. Some growers insist that soil too rich will produce too much follage. be untrue with their plauting Though they love the sun, they will flourish in partial shade. Their col- ors blend so perfectly that they may be sown together and the varied shades are beautiful indeed Many have found the petunia espe- cially attractive in hanging baskets. There are now the dwarf as well as the tall ones. The giant blossoms are fine for cutting. Some of the petunias are early bloomers, and others stay until frost kills them. If you wish Winter blooms you can plant seed late and take them indoors, where they will furnish bright flowers through the Winter. When purchasing seeds for the com- ing season, the names of the new varieties will intrigue you greatly. Rosy Morn blooms are pink and they are especially charming for window boxes against the white clapboards of & cottage. Countess of Ellesmere is & very much deeper shade, and looks well in a more dignified position. The petunias that wear ruffles and fluted petticoats are fine for edging beds, and the dwarf ones are satisfactory for bordering driveways. Where your garden has an abund- ance of sunlight, you will be delighted with the number of butterflies and hummingirds that visit there. In the evening the moths will come to call. Today you will find the double pe- tunias are favorites and the flowers often reach a width of 4 or 5 inches | across. The throats of the deeply- fringed ones are like fairy velvet, and the starlike markings radiating from the throat direct the many happy | guests to the flowing nectar well. It is one of the flowers you can play with to your heart’s content, if you are a flower lover who wishes to create new colors and types. You can propagate some of the varieties, and the old-fashioned kind often sow themselves. If you desire new plants for early blooming sow your seeds early in February. If you have some very handsome plants in late Autumn, cut them back and they will give you beautiful flowers if you place them in a sunny window indoors.
