By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, July 30.—Most divi- sions of business held in a steadier course this week, although some lines dragged along at a slow pace, Dun & Bradstreet said today in the Weekly Review. Retail sales went ahead 3 to 7 per cent from the preceding week, but the extension of gains over the 1936 com- parable week was shortened in many districts, the agency said. Industrial operations, however, ‘dem- onstrated surprising Summer strength as customary seasonal recessions were further postponed in many divisions and more factories reopened after va- cation shutdowns. Of retail trade the Review said: “Summer merchandise moved with g celerity unmatched in many years. To the numerous special clearances, fea- turing price reductions, were added the attraction of early August promotions. weather brought a more rapid turnover of both lightweight clothing vacation accessories, helped by st travel in many parts of New England States reported gains over a year ago of from 8 to 12 per East, 8 to 18; Middle West, 12 to 20; Northwest, 14 to 20; South, 12 to 25; Southwest, 12 to 30, and Pacific Coast, 10 to 20. The agency gave fresh confirmation of the especially bright outlook for agriculture. It said: “Expansion of orders for farm implements, following the marketing of enlarged crops in most areas, forced manufacturers to add extra shifts, instead of observing the usual Summer reduction program at this period.” Buying in principal wholesale mar- kets, the Review said, failed to rise much from the rate of the preceding week. although orders continued gen- erous for early Fall requirements, GASOLINE BOOST DUE. Excess bank reserves dropped to near the $800,000,000 level during the week ended July 28. These idle funds of member banks in the Reserve system declined $60.- 000,000 to $810,000,000 for the week, the Federal Reserve Board reported. The decrease followed a $90,000,000 drop last week, prior to which excess reserves had increased $210,000,000 in four weeks. Excess reserves provide the base for the Nation's credit, and the supply of such funds thus exerts a powerful in- fluence on credit conditions. In the past, Reserve officials have estimated $800,000,000 of excess reserves is ade= quate to maintain “easy money” cone ditions. The decline for the week ended July 28 was traceable in part to $44,000,000 increase in Treasury deposits with Fed- eral Reserve banks. This increase, which brought Treasury deposits to $228,000,000, presumably reflected a shift of funds from member banks to the Reserve institutions The board reported a $12,000,000 decline in money in circulation during the week to $6.424.000,000, or $301.- 000,000 over the same week last year, Gold stocks rose $29,000.000 to a new record peak of $12.433.000,000. The board's statement said: “During the week ended July 23 member bank reserve balances de~ creased $82.000,000. The reduction in member bank reserves resulted from increases of $20,000.000 in Treasury cash other than inactive gold, $44.- 000.000 in Treasury deposits with Pede eral Reserve banks and $47.000.000 in non-member deposits and other Fed- eral Reserve accounts and a decreace of $4,000.000 in Reserve bank credit offset in part by an increase of $21 - 000.000 in Treasury currency and a decrease of 812,000,000 in money in circulation. EXcess reserves of mem- ber banks on July 28 were estimated to be approximately . $810.000.000, a decrease of $60.000.000 for the week. Inactive gold included in the gold stock and in Treasury cash amounted to $1.202,000,000 on July 28, an in- crease of $29,000,000 for the week.” FEDERAL LAND BANKS NEW YORK.
