C., | { TRADE IMPROVES ON BROAD FRONT Most Divisions Show More Definite Signs of End of Summer Lull. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, July 23.—Most di visions of trade moved forward this Wweek, giving more definite signs of the end of Summer slackness, Dun 4 Bradstreet said today in the weekly review of business. Retail sales were estimated at from 2 to 6 per cent ahead of the preceding week and from 8 to 20 per cent better than at this time last year; wholesals markets were kept busy with reorders and were rid of the speculative ine fluences which beset them a year ago, and, while vacations forced curtaile ment in some divisions of heavy ine dustry, others were forced to higher operating rates to meet delivery ree quirements. “Helped by store-wide clearances,” the agency said of retail trade, “sales moved ahead steadily all week. Dea spite concentration of interest in sea= sonal merchandise, response was gene erous to half-yearly sales of furniture, bedding and lamps. No consumer ree sistance was offered to higher prices on initial offerings of Fall coats and fur garments.” More favorable shopping weather was noted in most centers, which played its part in enabling stores in New England to report increases over last year of 8 to 16 per cent; Eaatern States, 6 to 15; Middle West, 15 to 25; Northwest, 18 to 25; 8outh, 12 to 20; Southwest, 15 to 30, and Pacific Coast, 12 to 18. The agency said that factory laye offs in some industrial sections, cure tailing spending by workers, was more than counterbalanced by enlarged buying in farm areas. A high point in industrial divisions was a 35 per cent increase in ship- ments of pianox over 1936 and the doubling of production of radios for automobiles, both items considered of the purely luxury type. g FEDERAL LAND BANKS NEW YORK, July 23 (®).—Federal Land Bank bonds B, Atked.
