By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, July 12.—Business barometers have mounted with the temperature at the Nation's leading play spots and attractions for Sum- mer travel. From travel circles today came re- ports of the biggest July tide of vaca- tion travelers and hot-weather refugees since the economic trend turned to- ward recovery. Out of an improved income, travel men noted, the annual Summer horde of vacatfonists and travelers has been spending rather freely after pinching on such recreations during the hard years. The American Express Co., in a survey of travel tendencies, said the July Fourth week end, throwing Sum- mer travel into high gear, had ini- tiated the brightest outlook for “long- distance” vacation business the in- dustry has ever seen. Domestic travel, it noted, ran about 30 per cent ahead of last year, giving | the season a strong send-off 1001, 641y 103 . 99% 1041y 1063 1065 | 1017 | 107 997, 13 | 2| the ™| since | and special Contributing to the increase has been the spread of play-with-pay va- cations and the five-day week, giving leisure for excursions out of cities. While steel, textile and other indus- tries have stepped down to a slower | seasonal gait, business in other quar- | ters has responded to the travel rush. Over the Fourth of July week end train, bus, ship and airplane facilities were crowded in what some author- ities said was a record-breaking short holiday boom, With improvement in economic con- ditions generally, travel men figure July and August should turn out the best Summer travel since 1930 or 1929. STEEL PRODUCTION AT 827 PER CENT Jump Attributed to Rebound From Fourth of July Let-Downs. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, July 12.—After being depressed for several weeks by strikes and seasoanl curtailment over Fourth of July, steel production has bounced | back to 82.7 per cent of capacity from 673 a week ago, the American Iron and Steel Institute estimated today. This compares with an eprating rate of 69 per cent a vear ago. The current week's rate is the highest since late in May, operations of some of dependent mills and checked produc- tion after new records for ingot out- put had been established. In steel circles the jump of 154 downs. The holiday curtailment, was noted, had obscured the back-to- work march in strike-hit plants which was in progress before Independence day. The industry again had a comfor- table margin of gain over the compar- able period last vear after the early pertod. buying of steel products was reported However, many producers have carried into the Summer sizeable accumula- tions of orders from the Spring and Winter months. This backlog has served as a cushion for actual pro- duction in face of the seasonal slack- ening in demand. INVESTING COMPANIES NEW YORK.
