DAILY SHORT STORY GETAWAY M BUSY set- ting up lo- cal items, one day last month, when the front door opens fnd some one comes into my newspaper office. T look up and see old Joe Grant, our sheriff, but I keep right on setting type. My Lake- ville Eagle screams every Thursday— come sheriffs, fire or high water— and, anyhow, Joe's my friend. “He's lowern a buzzard,” I hear Grant's rough voice saving. “I'll have to invent some lower name to call him.” “Call who, sher- if1." I iaquires, knowing old Joe's peculiar way of going at things, and being much in- terested “Bill Miller,” he growls. “He says if I don't get busy and go out and arrest Herb Wright that he will look up the law about malfeasance.” Miller's our prosecuting attorney. “‘Malfeasance, you say, Joe? That’ where an officer fails to do his duty ~—and stuff like that—isn't it?” * ok ok % “YES. Miller's sore because I haven't rounded Herb up be- this. Y've had a warrant for his arrest for nearly three weeks, now, but haven't had a chance to eerve it “Don't want to, you mean,” I cor- rected. I know exactly how Kkind- hearted old Joe Grant feels about Herbert Wright shooting this stranger ~Percy Smith—over some insinuating remarks that Smith made about Herb's pretty, voung wife. No one could talk about Irma. “Guess I've got to catch him, Shorty. And it's too bad. Ive been hoping Miller'd forget it. But there's no chance. 1 see. And seeing I'm here, I want to ask you to do me a favor—when I get back with young Wright.” “Keep his arrest out of the Eagle, you mean? “No, not that I want on his bail bond.” “Sure, Joe—sure.” I agree. won't run off. How's Smith, guy Herb shot?” * k% "HE'S coming all right Doc Lowry says helll be out of the hospital in another week or so, and fat and sassy as ever.” “Wright's a lucky boy, sheriff. Three h t slugs from a .38. Wonder they didn’t kill this guy “You and Miller'd ought to get to- gether and sing a duet, Shorty. That's all he's harped about since it hap- pened. Miller doesn't care if he breaks up Wright's home—and ruins his whole life, and Irma's—so long as he can get a conviction, Claims he intends to tell Wright's jury that only an act of God prevents him from having to try this boy for premed- itated, first-degree, cold-blooded mur- der. Bah! Miller makes me mor- bid.” Old Joe catches Herb Wright the next day. Knew where Herb was hiding out all along, more than likely. A fellow named Wilson and I sign his bond—and then the fun starts. Grant and Miller begin arguing again—like a couple of school kids— | and they're both bullheads when bucking each other. Joe's trying to get Miller to drop this charge against Herbert Wright—and Bill says noth- ing doing. I add my plea, without results. A couple of more weeks pass “Hauling a ro fore you to go “Herb the then Sheriff Grant drops in on me again. “What's new?” I inquire. *“Nothing. Not a blooming thing. That's the trou- ble.” “Smith's out of the hospital,” I in- form him, “He got out yes- terday, Miller's keeping him —at county expense—to testify against the kid. Don't know what I can do, but, by golly, I find a way to do some- thing. TI'll bet you that this fellow has pulled such stuff on other women, before now. Trouble is—I can't prove it.” * oK ok K THEN one Tuesday afternoon, I | trail old Joe Grant into Chub Warner's tavern and, to me, it looks like our sheriff is about half plas- tered. “Have a drink, Shorty Adding: “I'm celebrating. Having a grand time. Got a letter this morn- ing that more than suits me. Take something, Chub.” “I'll take a cigar, sheriff. What's the good news?" That'd be telling, Chub. say—specially, not to you Bill Miller are cousins you what I will do. Now, you're a gambler, Chub—aren't you? el Miller thinks that he's going to con- 1l of bills out. " he invites, I can't u and But I'll tel vict Herb Wright, tomorrow, doesn't | e 225 “Bill told both me an’ Smith that he couldn't lose.” No,” old Joe drawls—hauling a of bills out of his pants pocket and slapping them down on the bar in front of Chub. “Bet you any part of it that he does lose,” Gran: an- nounces, adding: “And to show you that I'm a sport, Il give you odds. Say—two to one.” You must know something,” Chub fences. | "How about taking on a hundred— at three to one?” * ok % ok HUB is a gambler, and such odds makes him shy. “Four to one that no juryll con- I'vict Herb Wright of shooting Smith —not after they hear what I—but there I go giving the secret away— and me trying to get a bet out of vou! T alwavs get foolish when I'm drinking, like everybody does. Of course, you won't bet, now. Mind you Chub. no repeating what I've let slide out of me to either Miller or Smith. Smith, especially. I don't want that dude to suspect a thing. Well, Shorty, come on. Il go see some more gamblers—and try to keep my mouth shut.” So Grant and I walk on out. “What's the big idea?” I inquire, when we get up the street a ways. | “I'm plaving a hunch in the hole,” the sheriff informs me. “Chub and Smith are thicker than Chub and il\’[illel‘. Chub’s bound to tell Smith all I've said—and if Smith is wanted | elsewhere, for any crime whatsoever, | he'll high-tail it out of town, pronto.” “And Miller will have no witness ! against young Herb—no complaining witness,” I remark, joyfully. “None." Joe agrees—smiling broadly. And Miller had none. Percy Smith —if that ever was his name—slunk aboard the midnight west-bound fly- er that same evening. and the smile on homely old Joe Grant's face is even wider than Bill Miller'’s frown! | (Copyright, 1933.)
