A—12 BUST OF EX-SLAVE WILLBEUNVELED Dr. Carver, Famous Negro Scientist, to Receive Trib- ute for His Work. ©s the Associated Press. TUSKEGEE, Ala, May 31.—A bronze bust of a former slave who heeded the admonition of Booker T. Washington to “look after the farm and make the grass grow up at the normal school” will be unveiled today ‘st Tuskegee Institute. The bust is that of Dr. George Washington Carver, who came here {rom Iowa State College in 1896, when Washington was president of this now famous Negro college. In the inter- vening 40 years Carver made many contributions to science in his re- search work with Southern farm prod- ucts, including 300 by-products of the peanut. While at Iowa College he took Becretary of Agriculture Wallace, then just a boy, along on his fleld trips and interested him in agricul- ture. Was Born a Slave. “He was such an inquisitive little youngster,” Dr. Carver said, “he wanted to know everything about every plant.” Dr. H. E. Barnard of the Farm Chemurgic Laboratories, Dearborn, Mich,, will deliver the chief address at the unveiling ceremonies. The bust was made possible by hundreds of contributions from all parts of the country—honoring the man who was born a slave at Dia- mond Grove, Mo, in 1864, and later 8old for a race horse worth $300. The 73-year-old scientist will be on hand at the unveiling of the bust, which will stand on the campus at the entrance of Tuskegee Science Hall—not far from the spot where a heroic figure of Booker T. Washington in bronze is lifting a symbolic mantle of darkness from the Southern Negro. Working on Paralysis Cure. Dr. Carver worked his way through Minneapolis, Kans., High School and received degrees from Iowa State Col- lege and Simpson College, Indianola, Jowa. He was elected .2 member of the Royal Society of Arts in London in 1917, and was awarded the Spingarn medal for his research work in 1923. A shy, humble man, he continues his study of Southern farm products in hopes of adding to his long list of achievements. His present work centers around a peanut oil he has used with some degree of success on sufferers from infantile paralysis, but he has de- clined to pass final judgment on its merits pending more exhaustive tests. He has never married. E5 the Associated Press. MONTS, France, May 3f—Final preparations were speeded today for the arrival of the first guests for the wedding next Thursday of the Duke of Windsor and Mrs. Wallis Warfield.
