Crown Zeller (new) BELOW YEAR AGD 6.7 Per Cent Drop Is Laid to Earlier Observance of Easter. BY EDWARD C. STONE. Owing to Easter coming in March this year, retail trade in Washington in April dipped 6.7 per cent below the record for April, 1936, the Reserve Bank of Richmond reported this noon. Combining March and April makes a fairer comparison, which shows a gain in department store sales in the Cap- ital of 3.2 per cent, while in the first four months of the present year sales here were 4.3 per cent better than a year ago. This increase compares with & jump in the first four months of 1936 of 12.1 per cent against the like 1935 period. Lynchburg, Va., made the best rec- ord of any city in the fifth district in April, sales being up 4.4 per cent. The fifth district average for the 57 Teporting stores was off 3 per cent from April, 1936. Sales in March and April combined were 7.7 per cent ahead of last year and up 8 per cent in the first four months of 1937 com- pared with 1936. The national aver- age of 515 reporting stores was up 4 per cent in April and 12 per cent in the four months, compared with the 1936 periods. There was also a shift, the Rich- mond bank adds, from the three most popular makes to higher priced cars, registrations of the three making up only 67 per cent of the total new-car registrations in the first quarter of this year in comparison with 72.5 per cent in the first quarter of 1936.
