, GANGS' FOE SEES CITIZENS AROUSED Chicago Crusader Lauds “Modern Committee of Vigilantes.” By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, April 29.—An 85-year- old crusader against crime who was among the first to hang the sobriquet “public enemies” on gangsters, said today the citizenry had “finally awakened” to the necessity for co-op- eration with peace officers in the war on organized vice. Commending a group of New York men for forming a modern committee of vigilantes to control crime, Frank J. Loesch, active president and creator »+ of the Chicago Crime Commission and for years a militant combatant of corruption in politicas and govern- ment, said it was an “excellent move in the right direction.” Crime Seen Increasing. The lawyer, who still believes in put- ting in & full day at his office and still is an unrelenting foe of racketeering, said it appeared business men and the law-abiding public had eventually opened their eyes and discovered vio- " lent crime increasing in congested dis- tricts. . “If that New York committee really wants to succeed,” Loesch said, “it will have to work in conjunction and close harmony with Federal agents, city police and State law-enforcing agen- eles. It should always play the role of an assistant and not try to usurp | the powers of others.” Expects Quick Results. OPPORTU credited with wiping out gangster rule here, Loesch asserted the New York Committee would produce quick re- sults. “Through the Crime Commission,” Loesch sald, “we have put the fear of law in the hearts of the gangsters. They know we mean business and are keeping constant track of them. There | will always be crime, but persistent work by investigators can keep it at a minimum, improve the morale of peace officers and help the public generally.” GIRL TRAFFIC VICTIM IDENTIFIED BY FATHER By the Associated Press. BECKLEY, W. Va, April 29.— State police announced today a young girl, who died in a traffic accident 18 days ago, had been identified as 19- year-old Neverine Render of Harris- burg, Il Sergt. Evan Hall said the girl's father, Alvin Render, made the identi- fication. He added Render told him the body would be sent to Harrisburg today. Render told the trooper that the girl left home about three months ago to look for work, and that she had been last heard from in Bluefield, W. Va.
