Paul H. Wendel's “‘confession” he kidnaped baby Charles A. Lindbergh, jr., saved Bruno Hauptmann from the elec- tric chair three days. Later the Government charged Ellis H. Par- ker, Burlington County detective chief, and his son, Ellis, jr.; Martin Schlossman, Harry Weiss and Mur- ray Bleefeld with abducting Wen- del. Schlossman and Weiss were convicted recently and sentenced to 20 years to life. Bs the Associatea Press. NEWARK, N. J, April 27—A eharge of attempted tampering with members of the jury panel was made | at the opening today of the trial of | Ellis H. Parker and his son, Ellis, jr., for conspiracy in the Paul H. Wendel kidnap-torture case—a sequel of the Lindbergh kidnaping. United States Attorney John J. Quinn said a grand jury would be asked to investigate the statement | of a member of the panel that he had been approached by a man who told him it would “be easy to make some change on this jur Quinn, answering a question by a | member of the defense staff, said he believed defense attorneys had noth- | ing to do with the alleged tampering | attempt but that he believed ‘the defendants knew all about it.” Questioning of members of the | panel regarding possible tampering took up the entire morning session. Judge Clark sent other members of the panel from the court room while he heard the story of Michael J. Bles- sington of West Orange. The man who approached him, Bles- sington said, remarked “5 or 10 grand would be nothing.” Blessington said he himself had been excused from juyy service prior to the incident, but testified that another member of the panel later remarked to him that “some change can be made here.” He said he asked what he meant |and was told: “This Parker trial that is coming up.” United States Attorney John J. Quinn, commenting on the story of J. Mercer Davis of counsel for Parker, chief of Burlington County detectives, and his son, said: “Something lousy has happened.” Tells of Telephone Call. Blessington, a W. P. A. supervisor in West Orange, said he had asked to be excused because he served on a Federal jury three years ago. He said he was first called on the phone by a man whom he had known 15 or 20 years. An appointment was made, he said, and he met the caller and another man, The former, Blessington said, then made the remark about making “some change.” When he declared he had been excused, he said, the man asked him for names of other prospective jurors. He said he gave some names | he knew. Later, Blessidgton said, another member of the banel spoke to him about the “change that can be made here.” This prospective juror, Pete F. De Angelo, was called and denied he had talked to Blessington about the case.
