BOSTON, April 27.—During the first quarter of 1937 net resources of Incor~ porated Investors increased from $77,= 000,000 to approximately $82,000,000, due almost entirely to rising quotations for securities in the portfolio inasmuch as the entire authorized issue of 3,- 000,000 shares was outstanding prior to the beginning of the period. ‘The liquidating value of each share increased from $25.77 as of December 31, 1936, to $27.33 as of March 31, 1937, Unrealized profits in the portfolio amounted to approximately $27,000,000. In a letter to shareholders, Willlam A. Parker sajd: “The management has extended its policy of purchasing securities of the “feast or famine” type of company. This action is based on the belief that the business of the country is ap- proaching & stage of the cycle when, if ever, feasts may be laid upon the table for the patient and hungry owner of the heavy industry and building trades and of the railroads with their mount- ing traffic.” Washington Produce , BUTTER—92 score. MARKET AWAITS U.S. STEEL ACTION Directors Weigh Problem of Arrearages and Com- mon Dividend. By the Assoctated Press. * NEW YORK, April 27.—Wall Street awaited the meeting of United States Steel directors scheduled for late this afternoon with keen interest today. Directors were confronted with the problem of arrears of unpaid divi- dends on the preferred stock amount- ing to $9.25 a share, together with regular quarterly payment of $1.75 due to be ordered at this time. It was pointed out that with 3,- 602,811 preferred shares outstand- ing, $39,630,921 would be required to clear up the arrearages and disburse the regular quarterly payment, should the directors take such a step. To meet this, the corporation had on December 31 cash and marketable securities aggregating some $125,000,- 000. The earnings in the three months ending March 31 were to be announced after today’s meeting. In the past, sources close to the big steel company have expressed the opinion that its cash account should be maintained around $100,000,000 at least. At the recent annual meeting of stockholders it was recalled that Myron C. Taylor, chairman, remarked that he had a “tremendous ambition” to see all stockholders “rewarded” for their patience. There have been no disbursements on the common stock since 1932, and Wall Street has expected that arrear- ages on the preferred would be cleared up before anything would be paid to common stockholders. Dividends on the preferred issue are cumulative at the rate of $7 a share annually, and for the first time | since the corporation was formed in 1901, the company failed to pay the full regular rate on this issue in 1933. In December of last year a payment | of $7 on account of arrearages was made, and at the January meeting the regular quarterly payment of $1.75 was ordered.
