If the deli- ET us be done with fears and cate skin should tear the tarantula bleeds to death. As you know, spiders have the gift of renewing legs lost in battle or by myths concerning so many of nature’s children. Tarantulas live to be 18 to 20 years old. Fourteen to sixteen is a common age for those in captivity, which state, by the way, they really enjoy. Tarantulas, according to highest authority in spider circles, are not dangerous. They do not secrete poi- son, they are of a peaceable disposi- tion and most interesting. You have to do a lot to them to make them angry, and then their bite is not as dangerous as that of a harmless insect. The size of tarantulas is against them. They look too much as if they mean business, to those who are un- acquainted with their harmless ways. As these husky spiders can be found In so many of the States, and it seems in each one of them they have been given a bad name, it is high time to know the whole truth con- cerning them. First, tarantulas are more interest- ed in getting out of your reach than you are out of theirs. In spite of the fact they have eight eyes mey‘ have very poor vision. They never | jump for a fine husky grasshopper, | the one insect they are most fond of, even though it is right within their reach. But let that same grasshopper touch just one of those frairy legs— that is the end of the hopper The legs are so sensitive they serve as sight. The tarantulas are plentiful in Tex- as, Oklahoma, Arkansas, New Mexico, Arizona and California. They love hillsides which are dotted with stones under which to hide, or they build their burrows when these shelters are missing. In late September and October tarantulas seek their mates. At this time you may see a male sitting be- fore the door of his lady love. The following Summer look for the females as they stand guard over their handsome, thick-walled cocoons. In these silken bags will be from 600 to 700 eggs. The mother hauls her heavy egg basket from the burrow into the sun. The genial rays are a great aid in hatching them. If you come close to her and try to handle the case, she will take it quickly into the burrow and rear upon her hind legs as if to strike you. Her open fangs make those who see her think she is a dangerous woman, defending her offspring. If you push her too far she may even consume the whole | brood. The first year of a young tarantu- la’s life is full of narrow escapes and starvation. It grows slowly the first six months, then tries to see how fast it can grow in the next 5 or 6 years. During their infancy they shed their hairy coats twice a year; later once is sufficient, as growth is more grad- ual. This, indeed, is a most hectic time for tarantulas, as molting is a critical experience. They become ill, very depressed, and helpless. On the day the coat is shed the poor thing “flmm@mrg % Hair at eighteen is brilliant The tarantula as & pet is most friendly and interesting.
