BY the Associatec Pr NEW YORK, April 19—The New York Stock Exchange has moved to further govern trading activities of members, in accordance with recom- | mendations made by the Securities and i Exchange Commission. In new rules effective May 17 the | exchange places members and partners in member firms on the same footing with the general trading public as to margin requirements. | They require members, when trad- ing for their own accounts, to maintain at all times margin of 55 per cent in the form of cash or collateral of the market value of the securities they are carrying with their own firms or with | other member firms. The new rules are the culmination of a long inquiry conducted by the S. E, C. into member trading. In suggest- ing them, the commission held exces- sive trading by members for their own account tended to widen the market's fluctuations. Under the old system it was possible for members in so-called “daylight” trading to buy and sell many lots of stock in course of a single session, with but nominal marginal coverage, so long as accounts were evened up at the close. A supblementary rule covers opera- tions of registered stock exchange firms, in dealings for their own ac- counts.
