B—6 *# FLEET IN PACIFIC l';‘f,‘ie"é'fefiyc‘f.f,’,’?mz READY FORACTION 139 Shups and 474 Planes Begin Maneuvers Within 24 Hours. B the Assoclated Press. SAN PEDRO, Calif., April 15.—One hundred and thirty-nine ships of the United States Fleet and 474 airplanes made last-minute preparations today for six weeks of maneuvers in the Pacific. Within 24 hours the fleet will be under way. Admiral Arthur J. Hep- burn, commander in chief, is one of the Navy's foremost experts on the 5,000,000-square-mile area in which the war games will be held. His study of the Eastern Pacific area started shortly after the Spanish- American War when he participated in a 40,000-mile oceanagraphic survey. During it he witnessed the rare spec- tacle of a new volcanic island aris- ing in the ocean. To Test Oahu Defense. ‘The fleet's 1937 maneuvers will test the defense of Oahu, capital island of Hawaii; will carry out operations in the stormy Aleutians, and embrace a high seas battle exercise. Every unit and force will be strictly on its own. There will be no theoret- ical or constructive forces involved, no conflict of imaginary ships and imaginary men. On Oahu is situated the greatest military post of the United States. At Pearl Harbor, the Navy's greatest naval base, are giant air patrols and submarines. Their regular mission is Hawaiian defense. In past exercises when the fleet staged an attack on the islands there were a lot of imagi- nary forces defending it. Mighty Force Ready. In a week or so this mighty fleet of dreadnaughts, heavy cruisers, light cruisers, aircraft carriers, submarines, destroyers and miscellaneous craft will attack the islands. The Army forces there, under Maj. Gen. Hugh A. Drum, and the Navy forces under Rear Ad- miral Orin G. Murfin, will use just what they have to meet the fleet's striking power. Rear Admiral Walter N. Vernou, commander of cruisers of the Battle Force, first will take a force from California bases to visit Alaska and the Aleutian Islands area, so the offi- cers and men involved can learn the | lessons of navigation in the difficult Northern waters. After a stop-over at Dutch Harbor, Unalaska, this force | will turn south to join the “war” games. MRS. LAURA M’LEAN DEAD AT AGE OF 80 Deceased, Native of Washington, ‘Was Retired Government Print- ing Office Employe. Mrs. Laura Virginia McLean, 80, retired employe of the Government | Printing Office, died yesterday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Annie L. Hunt, 3615 Albemarle street, after a long illness. A native of Washington, Mrs. Mc- Lean was the widow of George H. McLean, who died many years ago. She was retired 15 years ago, after | 30 years’ service with the Govern- ment. Besides Mrs. Hunt she leaves two other daughters, Mrs. May E. Ryce, this city, and Mrs. Lillian V. Hyams, Los Angeles, and a brother, Frank Germon, this city. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow at Hines’ funeral home, 2901 Fourteenth street. Burial will | be in Glenwood Cemetery. Lightning Strikes Twice. EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (#).—Light- ning never strikes twice in the same place? Several years ago it bit at the cornice of the Madison County court house. In the same spot early yesterday, a bolt knocked off a por- tion of the cornice. Twenty-five feet away 12 jurymen and a bailiff slept undisturbed. While in Storage Model Exhibited at Cen- tury of Progress Found Damaged. Rats in the House of Representa- tives and a wasp's nest over the front door of the Capitol! That's what officials of the National Capital Park and Planning Commis= sion found today when they took from storage their model of the Capitol after they had moved into their new offices in the Interior Department. The model was part of the layout of the National Capital which the com- mission exhibited at the Century of Progress Exposition at Chicago. In the new Interior Department Building the commission will have its own model exhibit hall on the seventh floor. So William T. Partridge, the commission’s consulting architect, who also makes the models, got out the old Capitol model and found that wasps had built themselves a nest over the east front. In the House chamber rats had made themselves quite at home and even chewed away part of the outer walls. The model was stored in the prapagating gardens' store- house at Fifteenth street and Inde- pendence avenue. MAJ. CARL W. SHAFFER RITES WILL BE TODAY Alexandria Physician Will Be Buried in Arlington With Military Honors. Maj. Carl W. Shaffer, Army Medi- cal Corps, retired, who died Tuesday at his home in Alexandria, Va., will be buried with full military honors in Arlington National Cemetery at 3 p.m. today. The cortege will move from the Fort Myer gate to the grave, in section 7, where services will be held with Chaplain Ora J. Cohee officiating. Maj. Shaffer was born in Wood- stock, Va., March 22, 1887, and en- |tered the Army in July, 1917. He was retired because of disability in August, 1933. He is survived by his | widow, Mrs. Dorothy C.
