B the Associated Press. AUSTIN, Tex., April 8 —Launching of the program to unionize the oil industry stood out today as one of the most important developments re- cently in the production and handling of petroleum. In Texas oil men and State officials watched closely the announced plans of organizers and the declaration of Gov. James V. Allred that “sit-down” methods would not be tolerated. Rumors of the unionization drive had been heard a long time before the arrival in Houston of Harvey C. Fremming, Oil Union chief and Com- mittee for Industrial Organization leader. Premming asked the Governor to investigate his organizers and if a “single subversive member” was found he would be dismissed. He also said he had not come to Texas to organize a sit-down strike. Allred said he had received names of eight organizers and if they were not planning sit-down methods “they have nothing to fear.” O] sources at the State capital said they had heard of no agitation among field workers and expressed the opinion it would be difficult for agitators to gain a foothold. ‘Oil fleld workers generally are well paid,” said Lon Smith, member of the Rallroad Commission, which admin- isters the State conservation laws. “This was true even during the de- pression.” It was noted that in the great East Texas fleld workers long have had a union. The labor overshadowed production matters, es- pecially since the next State-wide proration hearing was two weeks away. Production for the month was cut about 50,000 barrels daily under that for the previous proration period. | Officials irdicated there was no in- formation on which to base predic- tions as to the May allowable. —_—— CHICAGO LIVE STOCK. | Department ' of including Wweak 10 _Agriculture). —Hogs. 7.500 direct: market un- lower: top. 10.25; bulk 0-300 'pour.ds 150-180 pounds. 9.50a10.10 packing sows steady at 9.35ai1.70.
