- SCULPTORASSALLS JEFFERSON DESIGN Competition Open to All| Artists Demanded by Society Executive. Milton Horn of New York City, | ehairman of the Cultural Committee and member of the Executive Board of the American Sculptors Society, today was on record as protesting against the accepted design of the | Thomas Jefferson Memorial, which is to be erected at the south end of the Tidal Basin in West Potomac Park. Horn, in a prepared statement, said: “We, therefore, demand that the Con- Sonnysayings gress of these United States discard this design and lift the curse which Jefferson, himself, wiote 1 his “Notes on Virginia” 153 years ago, when he said, ‘'The Genius of Architecture seems to have shed her maledictions over this land'—and issue a competi- tion open to all architects and sculp- tors/and that the basis of that com- petition shall be the choice of a design | which will be natural to its site, built | in materials which are most natural to its location, in which there shall be a perfect collaboration between the arts of architecture and sculpture; also, in its dignity, truth and virility be a true symbol o1 our commemora- l tion to the man who wrote our Dec- laration of American Independence, who was the third President of our United States and a man who sought | after an architectural truth.” The proposed memorial, Horne con- tended, is “not a monument, but a senile sham, not a representation of | al, but a burial of that ideal |* he guise oI misunderstood tra- | 1 and ar i { people of foreign to the r ral to the soil upon which it n tu 15 to be re: | John Russell Pope, who designed | the Mellon Art Gallery, is the architect | who designed the memorial for the | Thomas Jefferson Memorial Commis- | sion. The leaders adopted a report of a committee of the church on visual education, establishing standa-ds with regard to motion pictures for the guidance of more than 100,000 stu- dents in the denominational educa- tional institutions. The standards make a fundamental distinctien between ‘“natural pictures or pictures of real life” and “pictures of dramatized theatrical plots.” The latter, it was said, are based o1 prin- ciples which are “inherently wrong STAR, WASHINGTON . Among the list of “unacceptable” films are those “portraying Christ and inspired men,” pictures showing ro- mantic love-making, films featuring dancing, card playing, gambling and drinking; films portraying crime or glorifying criminals, films portraying scenes of violence or cruelty, portrayals of family disruptions, scenes of night life, revelry and rowdiness, and films which “distort history and pervert truth.” —Enelvele v Take Names From Talents.
