NEW YORK, March 9-—Oflenngs of low-yield bonds at levels under previous finals were coincident today | in some divisions of the Bond market with a further sag in United States Governments. Early in the session the Faderal {ssues worked 1-32 to 5-32 of a point lower. Despite the unchecked decline, there was, according to dealers, no evi- dence of active selling, and the same was true of top-grade corporate liens, which buvers were able to pick up at fractionally lower prices. A number of liens in the specula- tive divisions profited by the selective strength of the share list. Loans of Youngstown Sheet & Tube, Pure Oil and Great Northern 4s “G. with conversion or other stock priv- | ileges, rose from 1 to 2% points. American Typefounders, a volatile performer in recent sessions, dropped 1 shortly after the opening. Washington Exchange SALES. BY the Associated Press. NEW YORK, March 9.—A boost of $5 a ton in the price of lead was an- nounced today by principal producers following a similar increase yesterday. At the same time reports in trade circles indicated sales of No. 1 heavy melting steel scrap had been made at Pittsburgh at $22.50 a ton, the highest recorded sale price in 14 years. Following closing of the deal the trade was said to have generally raised quo= tations. The previous price was $22. The new price for lead is 7.50 cents a pound New York, and 7.35 cents East St. Louis. At the same time the speculative fever which has been manifest in non- ferrous metals, especially in foreign markets, continued as copper for ex- port rose to the equivalent of 16.85 cents a pound from as low as 16.40 cents Monday. The European armaments race is credited by trade experts with causing the wave of buying, some of it for actual metal to convert into arms, but much of it by speculators hoping to profit from this extraordinary call for metals. The domestic quotation for the red metal held at 16!; cents a pound, | to which it was raised yesterday from February. Washington Produce. STRONG DEMAND BOOSTS COTTON Price Rise Turns Attention to Sharp Increase in U. S. Consumption. BY the Associated Press. NEW YORK, March 9.—The up- swing in prices of raw cotton the last fortnight, lifting the March delivery above 14 cents a pound, has turned attention in financial circles to a big increase in home consumption of the staple. Since last Summer mills have South’s chief agricultural product. January use in the United States established a record for the month. In a rush to fill a heavy accumulation of orders, mills have been consuming the fiber at the rate of more than 600,000 bales a month. Cotton statisticlans see a good chance for & yearly consumption record since another sweeping wave of cloth de- mand rolled into Worth street last week. Even more significant, in the eyes of many, is the accent it throws on divergent trends of home and foreign use of American cotton. Loses Ground Abroad. Although still Uncle Sam’s No. 1 product in the world market, cotton has lost ground from an export stand- point compared with pre-depression years. | come entirely from home sources. ‘Whereas in other years the bulk of the crop was sold abroad, latest figures indicate home consumption this sea- son may approximate, if not surpass, exports. New York Cotton Exchange figures tell the story. They show only mod- erate increase in total world use of American cotton for the season from August 1 to the end of January. The total was 6,319,000 bales, compared with 6,148,000 in the comparable period of the previous season. Until a recent spurt, smpmems 1 | abroad were running 500,000 to 600,- | 000 bales behind last year and well under exports a few years ago. Mill Takings Soar. Forwardings to domestic users through last week, | u.he exchange reported, amounted to | against 4,153,000 in the ) | same period of the previous season. Meanwhile, use of foreign growths has increased, fed by larger plantings in South America and Asia. With world demand for all cotton | around record levels, consumption of foreign growths for the season to the end of January totaled 8,271,000 bales. The trend has been upward the last few years, shift remains to be seen.
