C—12 = AMUSEMENTS. THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C. SATURDAY, JANUARY 16. 1937. AMUSEMENTS. Office Girls on Man Hunt Sonja Henie's Grace | ,imemsome A. Dean wanted increased attendance Starred in Film at the Metropolitan Make an Amusing Film And Benny Davis Adds a Youthful Revue to Give Earle a Around Bill. BY JAY CARMODY. BUSINESS achool executive might feel pretty badly about * Than & Secretary,” which opened at the Earle Theater yesterday, but every one else probably will enjoy it. It deals with graduates of business colleges who keep their minds on their bosses more than on their notes and typewriter keys. In work, it manages to be amusing and it might even inspire some persons to become successful enough to haveg—— = = secretaries of their own. Any spurring of ambition, of course, would be an indirect virtue of the film. As Columbia made it, it is sup- posed to inspire only laughter. It does that. Moreover, no one need worry ahout the thing being too subtle. No, ma'am! For its stage show, the parent house of the local Warners’ chain has hired Benny Davis, the song and band man. He peoples the stage with a band of comfortable proportions and & group of young singers, dancers and co- medians who spend an hour combining into a pleasant, if not startling, revue. “More Than a Secretary” is her- alded by Columbia Pictures as the successor to “Theodora Goes Wild.” | Since the producer started the com- parison, it probably is all right for the drama reporters who come after to say that it hardly is as good a pic- ture as the last comedy from the same studios. “Theodora” was exceptional. Its successor is not. ! this film, however. | Here he is & combination switchboard | the first line of the refrain of many Pleasant All- ore the process of telling how secretaries type, for whom the girls go stalking. At one point in the film, he is called an “animated carrot” by one of his furious pursuers. He is not that in In his more sober part Mr. Brent looks capable even beside Lionel Stander, who has not missed being excellent since he read ethereal verse out of the corner of his mouth in “The Scoundrel” Again Stander tough talks his way into being one of the brightest spois in a picture. operator, masseur, trainer and physical education director. It is a good com- bination when it comes out as Lionel Stander. 8o is the whole film for that mat- ter, even though it will never be set | down as important. * ox X x BENNY DAVIS still has only to sing “Margie,” “Carolina Moon.” and others of his song successes to put Marks “One in a Million’’ s i s Skater Makes Bow in Pleasant Comedy at the Capitol-Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Weis- muller and Elida Ballet on Stage. BY HARRY MacARTHUR. ‘(O NE IN A MILLION,” the new musical film at Loew’s Capitol, has a lot in the way of entertainment. is abundant, its songs are pleasant and its story is interesting and | diverting even if it isn’t epochal. And above all, “One in a Million" presents Sonja Henie to motion picture audiences. The champion figure skater of them all definitely has something for movie audiences, too. She's not beau. tiful, but she's exceedingly attractive. | Her smile is a warm one that makes you want to smile back. She manages to give an impression of a wholesome and interesting personality. Sonja’s grace and the skill she dis- plays in her dancing on ice skates, however, are the greatest of her assets. It's something of a breath-taking thrill to watch her weave intricate | patterns on the ice, to look upon the | ease and flowing motion of perfect control and co-ordination of every muscle. Few dancers can compare with her for the sheer perfection of her art and for the faculty she has | for always making the right motion, which make her ice ballets a delight | to the eye. There's plenty of Sonja's figure skating in “One in a Million,” some of it backed up by skating choruses, but there’s even enough more to the picture to make it a pleasant enter- tainment beyond the efforts of Miss Henie. augural Revue.” It has the Elida | Dancers, Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Weis- mulier, Borrah Minnevich and his Harmonica Rascals, Frank Gaby and the Elida Dancers. That's not a mis- take. The Elida Dancers are in that sentence twice; they're that good. This week they show off their talents for two widely differing types of dancing, opening the revue with a tap- | drill number and coming back later for a graceful toe ballet. Johnny and his Mrs. (that's Lupe Velez, you know) do a pleasant per- sonal appearance stint, what with Johnny singing, Lupe doing a rhumba and a Hepburn impersonation and buth of them having considerable fun. More people would hear Johnny if he got closer to the mike for some of his patter, though. Mr. Minnevich and his dizzy crew, as is expected of them, contribute & happy quarter hour, and Frank Gaby does some fine bits of ven- triloguism even if some of his gags Its mood is gay, its comedy | he offered free taxi service to and from church for any unable to walk.
