Mr. Hanford, who, after an illness of 10 days, failed to rally from an at- tack of grip with complications, had been an employe of The Star since 1895. In his 42 years with the organi- zation his fine record of service had ultimately placed him in an executive | position of far-reaching duties and great trust. From the time he was as- sistant bookkeeper at the age of 21 until his death the qualities which led to his advancement became more and more apparent. Born in Sterling, Va., June 27, 1874, the son of Levi and Emma Gardiner Hanford, he came to Washington as | a youth and received his later educa- tion here before becoming associated with The Star. On October 22, 1901, he married Miss Nellie Mae Pugh, daughter of the late Representative and Mrs. Samuel J. Pugh of Kentucky, who survives him. Three Children Survive. Surviving, besides his widow, are a daughter, Mrs. Willlam Preston | Haynes; two sons, Wesley G. and 8. Mr. Hanford was a charter member of Temple-Noyes Masonic Lodge here | and a member of the Blue Ridge Rod and Gun Club, Harpers Ferry, W. Va. | His wide acquaintance with Wash- lngwn business and professional men, | both the cause and effect of his ex- traordinary efficiency and compelling personality, elicited yesterday expres- | sions of sorrow at his passing. Bank- | ers, lawyers, doctors, merchants, clerks | and accountants throughout the city, | as well as his closer associates who knew and loved him, have expressed to his family sympathy in their loss.
