PEPING SLAYING LD TOFOREENER Love Angle Hinted in Crim-| inal Attack and Murder of English Girl. By the Assoctated Press. , PEIPING, China, January 9.— Pamela Werner, 17-year-old English girl whose mutilated body was found yesterday in a ditch alongside the historic Tartar Wall, was killed by & blow on the head which fractured her skull, an autopsy disclosed tonight. | Doctors from the Peiping Union | . Meédical College said Miss Werner also had been criminally attacked. British authorities held a prelim- nary inquest. A formal inquest was scheduled for next week. Chinese Avoid Murder Scene. No arrests have been made. Chinese police advanced the theory a foreigner must have done the killing, because | Chinese believe the spot where the | Body was found is haunted and none would have ventured there. They suggested the killing may have been the climax of a love affair. At today's hearing at the British Embassy the girl's father, E. T. C. Werner, 72-year-old scholar and for- mer British Consular official, ldenli-‘ fled a watch found on the body as| Pamela's. He also identified a blood- | stained skirt found several yards from | the corpse, which dogs had mutilated | almost beyond recognition. Werner, a widower, disclosed that | yesterday morning, when he was| searching for his daughter, missing since the night before, he saw the body in the ditch but “never dreamed that gruesome sight was my daugh- ter.” Found Peiping Lonely. ‘Werner told the examiners Pamela had returned to Peiping December 26 from Tientsin, where she had at- tended the British Grammar School. Although apparently popular, she was Jonely in Peiping, he said. She left home Thursday afternoon, saying she was going to have tea with a Russian girl chum, Olga Gureivitch, 19, and | that later she was going skating. Members of the Gurevitch family said Pamela had confided to them she frequently quarreled with her father over bringing friends home. They said he resented some of them because | they interrupted his studies. Pamela preferred to live in Tientsin, where she had many friends, among them a Russian boy named Horashelvski. The British authorities were ex- pected to question Miss Werner's friend shortly. TOKIO, January 3.—Japan's plans | for economic development and auton- omization of North China have been threatened with collapse as a result of the Sianfu rebellion, the newspaper Asahi reported today in a special dispatch from Peiping, China. “Hopei, Chahar, Shansi and Shan-‘ tung provinces lost their initial en-\ thusiasm for autonomy under Jap- | anese tutelage, the report said. “Sianfuo shook to its foundations the existing Chahar-Hopei autonomous | region which co-operated economical- | ly and politically with Japan. “Chinese autonomous officials, con tude toward Japan, are avoiding con. tact with the Japenese since Nanking (the Central Chinese government)- as- sumed a stronger anti-Japanese atti- tude throughout China.” In this connection Gen.
