After Dark Smart People, Smart Things, Smart Places. By the Spectator. Miss Zinaida Nicolina, who sings in five languages, of whom a New York reviewer said, “Can lend pathos to a song in a manner unsurpassed,” which 1s an elaborate mouthful of words for s reviewer to say about anybody . . . though Dave Apollon says the same thing . . . Nicolina’s known well here, too, having sung at sundry society af- fairs . . . and she's appeared abroad under the sponsorship of Edward, Duke of Windsor, when he was Prince of Wales; Michael Tolstoi, Nikita Balieft . . and Monday she’ll sing again for ‘Washington at the Troika .. . sss A ND sinoe singing seems to be the topic of the moment, there’s the subject of these folk who sing or otherwise turn extrovert and entertain themselves at the tonier biergartens » o » Like the other night at Heigh-Ho + + . And down the street at the Troika the night before . . . Sam Sax- onsky was quietly fiddling away when & sudden sweet voice lifted in song . . and all the chitter-chatter about the tables stopped as the Troikaites lis- tened to “Sweet Mystery of Life” and “Indian Love Call,” as chanted sweet- 1y by a lass at a ringside table . . . who turned out to be Marjorie Gainsworth . . . late of the St. Moritz Hotel and now on the way to the Chicago Civic Opera Co. . . . dropping in at the Troika with a local legislator . . . and, of course, down at the Hi-Hat there’s always the chance that some one will step up, grab the mike by the ears, give vent to sing . . . just for his own . and sometimes the .“IT MAY be getting nigh onto Christmas . . . and the past week most of the vuln(en may have been at home resting from shopping bat- | El tles at night . . . but some of them #till got around . . . Martha Talley, who just made her debut, with a group of friends from her home State, Texas « . . Mrs. Flavel Roes, lunching often with friends . . . maybe because that's the time they can hear Eddie Elkins’ arrangement of the ballad written by Raleigh Manager Curt Schiffeler . . . Margo Chase and Genevieve Marsh, debutantes of yesterday, were feted yesterday at the Shoreham at a dinner party given by Mrs. B. P. Lamberton « « . and frequently at the same ball room have been seen Mary Senate Howes, much-feted “ranking deb” (her father’s Pirst Assistant Postmaster General) . . . and Eleanor Eccles, daughter of the Federal Reserve Board chairman, home from college for the holidays (she’s home from college, not her father) , , . While Troika stays diplomatic . . . with such folk as Charles Ortes de Zevallos, secretary de 1a Delegacion del Peru . . . Joseph J. H.
