By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, December 24.—The volume of bank clearings during the latest period touched the highest point since October 8, 1931. The total for 22 leading cities in the United States, as reported to Dun & Bradstreet, for the week ended Wednesday, December 23, was $7,762,~ 668,000, against $4,589,150,000 last year, a gain of 69.1 per cent. ' ‘This contrasted with an increase of 15.6 per cent in the week preceding. Important factors in this large turnover were the disbursement of dividend payments, bonuses, and also 8% | the heaviest holiday buying in years. A fair comparison cannot be made with the 1935 total because of the one 32% | less day at that time, due to the Christ- mas holiday which fell earlier. New York City clearings totaled $5,- 150,284,000, or 75.8 per cent in excess of the $2,929,677,000 in the correspond- ing five days of 1935.
